Join us if you’re passionate about groundbreaking international research and academic excellence. Ready to be part of our team? Let’s shape the future together!
Your personal sphere of play:
The research group “Atmospheric Transport Processes,” led by Prof. Andreas Stohl, is part of the Department of Meteorology and Geophysics. The group studies all aspects of transport in the atmosphere, ranging from greenhouse gases to pollutants, water vapour and heat.
To learn more about our team, we invite you to visit our website: https://flexteam.univie.ac.at/.
We seek a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher, who will study moisture and heat transport in the Middle East/Mediterranean region in the framework of the EU project Edu4Climate: https://edu4climate.cyi.ac.cy/.
Your future tasks:
- You select (a) case(s) of extreme weather in the Middle East/Mediterranean region;
- You use the Lagrangian model FLEXPART to determine heat and moisture sources for the extreme event(s);
- You compare with climatological heat and moisture transport based on an existing Lagrangian re-analysis;
- You publish your results in a peer-reviewed journal.
While the work will be performed in our team at the University of Vienna, you will have the chance to guide students at the University of Crete, which is our collaboration partner in this project and who will work on the same or similar extreme event cases. It is also expected that you will visit the University of Crete during the project.
This is part of your personality:
- Completed Ph.D. in the atmospheric sciences (e.g., meteorology, climatology), or a related field;
- Programming and data analysis experience;
- A good team spirit and willingness to collaborate;
- Strong English communication skills.
These skills would be an advantage:
- Experience with Lagrangian models;
- Experience with synoptic analysis of weather events.
What we offer:
Inspiring and supportive working atmosphere: You will be part of an international team in a healthy and fair working environment with excellent research infrastructure. You will not perform your work in isolation but in collaboration with other researchers working on similar cases of extreme events in other regions.
Fair salary plus health care and social benefits: The gross salary of at least EUR 4.752,30 (payable 14 times per year) allows for a comfortable life in a vibrant city with affordable housing prices and quick access to the outdoors.
Work-life balance: Our employees enjoy flexible working hours, remote/hybrid and/or part-time work (upon agreement).
Training and coaching: We offer you the opportunity to develop your skills on an ongoing basis.
Equal opportunities for all: We welcome diverse personalities in our team!
The University of Vienna aims to become carbon neutral by 2030: We fully support low-carbon options for traveling.
The position is available immediately. Our preferred starting date is March 2025 or before, but we have some flexibility if that does not work for you. The review of applications will begin on December 10, 2024. The search will continue until the decision is made.
We offer an initial contract for the duration of one year to work on the Edu4Climate project. However, we have recently acquired several other new projects starting next year and plan to extend our research team. Therefore, an extension of the contract may be possible, subject to the availability of funding.
It is that easy to apply:
- With a short letter stating your interest in this position and your motivation to apply;
- With your CV including a list of publications;
