The Department at the University of Vienna is the largest academic center covering all fields relating to the German language and German-language literatures. The core areas are Modern German Literature, Medieval German Language and Literature, Germanic Linguistic, German as a Foreign and Second Language, and German Teaching Methodology. In addition, the areas of Gender Studies, Cultural Studies, Media Theory, Literary Theory, and Literature for Children and Young Adults are well established. More than 5000 students are enrolled.

Your personal sphere of influence:

As a university assistant prae doc, you will have the opportunity to work at one of the largest departments of German Philology worldwide consisting of an inspiring group of people dedicated to a manifold range of research and academic teaching.

The employment duration is 4 years. Initially limited to 1.5 years, the employment relationship is automatically extended to 4 years if the employer does not terminate it within the first 12 months by submitting a declaration of non-extension.

Your future tasks:

You actively participate in research, teaching & administration, which means:

  • A dissertation project in the field of literary studies with one of the following focal points is expected: Literature and politics, conveying literature, intermediality
  • Participation in research projects in the above-mentioned subject areas
  • The successful candidate is expected to sign a doctoral thesis agreement within 12-18 months
  • Independent teaching of introductory and literary courses according to the collective agreement
  • Supervision of students
  • Involvement in the organisation of meetings, conferences, symposiums
  • Administration of departmental workflows, assistance in teaching and research

Desirable qualifications are:

  • teaching experience / Experience with the planning, organizing and implementation of scientific meetings
  • knowledge of university structures
  • experience abroad
  • experience in scientific work
  • lecturing activities

This is part of your personality:

  • Above-average degree in German Philology (Magister or MA or UF German, preferably in NdL)
  • Proven expertise and teaching skills in modern German literature
  • High ability to express oneself in speaking and writing
  • Excellent command of written and spoken English
  • IT user skills
  • Ability to work in a team
