TUD Dresden University of Technology, as a University of Excellence, is one of the leading and most dynamic research institutions in the country. Founded in 1828, today it is a globally oriented, regionally anchored top university as it focuses on the grand challenges of the 21st century. It develops innovative solutions for the world's most pressing issues. In research and academic programs, the university unites the natural and engineering sciences with the humanities, social sciences and medicine. This wide range of disciplines is a special feature, facilitating interdisciplinarity and transfer of science to society. As a modern employer, it offers attractive working conditions to all employees in teaching, research, technology and administration. The goal is to promote and develop their individual abilities while empowering everyone to reach their full potential. TUD embodies a university culture that is characterized by cosmopolitanism, mutual appreciation, thriving innovation and active participation. For TUD diversity is an essential feature and a quality criterion of an excellent university. Accordingly, we welcome all applicants who would like to commit themselves, their achievements and productivity to the success of the whole institution.
At the Faculty of Mechanical Science and Engineering, Institute of Solid Mechanics, the Chair of Dynamics and Mechanism Design offers a position as
Research Associate / PhD Student (m/f/x)
(subject to personal qualification employees are remunerated according to salary group E 13 TV-L)
starting January 1, 2025. The position is initially limited to three years with the option of extension. The period of employment is governed by the Fixed Term Research Contracts Act (Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz – WissZeitVG). The position offers the chance to obtain further academic qualification (usually PhD).
The Chair of Dynamics and Mechanism Design focuses on teaching and research in the fields of machine dynamics, system dynamics and structural dynamics, mechanism and vibration technology, mechanical and acoustic measurement technology as well as mechatronics and robotics. The illustration on the right shows an experimental set-up from aerial manipulation (see video).
Tasks: You will be part of a research project in the field of aerial manipulation in cooperation with TU München. The aim is to develop new manipulation capabilities for unmanned aerial manipulators (AMs). In future, AMs will be able to carry out complex manipulation tasks in environments that are difficult to reach. In contrast to conventional approaches, the project aims to systematically break down the manipulation tasks into mechanically motivated elementary flight states and thus create a generalized approach for the robust composition of a wide range of manipulation tasks. The main objectives are
- classification and experimental characterization of elementary flight states
- Omitting tradition Force/Torque sensors by developing advanced wrench estimation techniques
- development of tactile navigation approaches to increase positioning accuracy up to millimeter precision
- flight experiments on self-developed AMs in the flight laboratory
The tasks also include the supervision of student project-related theses, project documentation in accordance with the requirements of the project partners and project sponsors and the creation of scientific publications and presentations.
Requirements:
- university degree (Diploma/Master) in either robotics, mechatronic engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical or electronic engineering, physics with technical focus or related fields
- knowledge technical mechanics, system dynamics and control theory as well as modelling and simulation methods
- programming expertise in MATLAB/Simulink, C/C++ or Python
- fluent in English (written and spoken); fluent in German (beneficial)
- strong interest in working with robotic hardware
- the ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team
We offer:
- your own research topic with public project funding by the German Research Foundation (DFG)
- publication at international conferences
- being part of an interdisciplinary and emerging team
- close project cooperation with TU München, including the possibility to conduct parts of the PhD research abroad
For subject-related questions feel free to contact David Bernstein david.bernstein@tu-dresden.de.
