The Role

Aeroplane noise causes annoyance around airports and can be a limiting factor in expanding national and international trade and tourism.

The Institute of Sound and Vibration Research (ISVR, part of the School of Engineering here at Southampton) is a well-respected world-class institution with a long history of modelling and mitigating aeroengine noise.

This role involves developing and applying numerical (CFD/CAA) and semi-analytic methods to model and mitigate aeroengine noise sources. A key element in this role is to develop a new model for noise transmission through turbomachinery rotor and stator vanes.

The work will be carried out in collaboration with Rolls-Royce as part of the Rolls-Royce University Technology Centre in Propulsion Systems Noise (RRNoiseUTC). This long-standing collaboration enables us to direct our research at the most significant noise sources with the potential to impact the design of Next Generation Aeroengines such as the Rolls-Royce UltraFan.

The successful candidate will be expected to publish key findings at conference and journal level.

About You

The ideal candidate will have experience in both numerical (CFD/CAA) and analytic aeroacoustic modelling with a PhD or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in a related subject. You will have a proven ability to work independently towards robust and computationally efficient engineering models.

Working with industry requires a professional approach, keeping in mind wider industrial requirements, such as IP protection, as well as specific project deliverables and timescales. Previous experience of working with industry, for instance as part of a PhD project or Research Fellowship, will be of advantage.

Final Notes

Because this position is within the RRNoiseUTC some extra background checks are required in addition to those required as standard.

Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD. Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.
