Description
The Haven laboratory of Dr. Sandra Siby, in the Division of Engineering, New York University Abu Dhabi, invites applications for a Research Associate position in security and privacy.
The lab's mission is to provide individuals with control over their privacy and protection from digital threats. We aim to do this by (1) developing technological solutions that ensure user security and privacy without compromising on their online experience (2) working with different stakeholders to drive the adoption of policies that prioritize user protection. We want to work towards a future where digital services are inherently designed with user privacy and safety at the forefront.
Current topics of interest include improving security/privacy/trust:
- On the web
- In mobile/IoT/emerging technology ecosystems
- In on-device machine learning

The successful candidate will engage in research that includes applied machine learning, systems building, and internet measurements. This role is especially suited for individuals eager to contribute to the initial research directions and culture of a newly established lab.
Key Responsibilities:
- Contribute to defining the lab's initial research directions and methodologies.
- Lead and collaborate on high-impact research projects in applied security and privacy.
- Mentor Master's/Bachelor’s students, providing guidance on research projects.
- Participate in developing coursework and organizing academic and community outreach events.
- Engage with academic and industry partners to advance the lab's research goals.
Qualifications:
- A Masters in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related discipline, with a focus on security, privacy, or applied machine learning. (a Bachelors degree can be considered in well-justified cases).
- Good programming and analytical skills, and willingness to work with new technologies/systems.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a collaborative environment.
- Prior research experience is a plus.

The terms of employment are very competitive and include housing and educational subsidies for children. The appointment will be for a duration of 2 years with a possibility for renewal. This position will be based at New York University in Abu Dhabi, and the candidate must be ready to relocate to Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis and candidates will be considered until the position is filled.
