Research Fellow in Theoretical Physics
The University of Surrey is a global community of ideas and people, dedicated to life-changing education and research.
We have a bold vision of what we want to achieve - shaping ourselves into one of the best universities in the world, which we are achieving through the talents and endeavour of every employee.
Our culture empowers people to achieve this aim and to make a real difference.
The role
Applications are invited for a 2-year fixed term Postdoctoral Research Fellow position starting on 1 October 2025 (or earlier) to participate on a research project in quantum field and string theory. The project is part of the STFC Consolidated Grant “Fundamental Implications of Fields, Strings and Gravity” (Principal Investigator: Dr Jan Gutowski), in the School of Mathematics and Physics at the University of Surrey.
The research project will centre around the homotopy algebraic formulation of quantum field theory and involve different applications in the context of scattering amplitudes, renormalisation, supersymmetric localisation, integrability, and string/gauge dualities.
About you
The post-holder will work primarily with Dr. Martin Wolf, and will be expected to contribute original ideas to the development of new homotopy algebra techniques and applications to quantum field theory. The post holder must have:
- A PhD in Theoretical Physics or Mathematics (gained or near completion) with a strong research track record.
- Expertise with algebraic properties of quantum field theories, and in particular homotopy algebras.
- Expertise in at least one of the following topics: renormalisation, supersymmetric localisation, integrability, and string/gauge dualities.
- Excellent communication skills with previous experience in writing journal articles for publication and in making oral presentations.
- An ability to propose and develop original research ideas.
How to apply
Please submit with your application the following, on the University Website:
- i) CV (PDF maximum 2 sides A4)
- ii) a research statement highlighting recent and planned future research (maximum 2 sides A4, minimum 11pt font, with at least 2cm page margin)
- iii) 3 letters of recommendation.
Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed on the 20th of December 2024. If you have any question about this position or need any clarification, please contact Dr Jan Gutowski (Email: j.gutowski@surrey.ac.uk).
