Assistant professor in transportation engineering (tenure track)
We are seeking an ambitious and enthusiastic individual for a full-time tenure track position in the Spatial Planning and Transportation Engineering (SPT) research group. More details about Aalto University’s tenure track career path can be found below.
The position and our expectations
The SPT research group connects spatial planning and transportation engineering and seeks to identify how to create more attractive, accessible, equitable and resource-efficient urban environments. SPT’s three main research areas comprise: i) everyday human behaviour and values in the living environment; ii) new planning and policy-making methods and processes; and iii) development and governance of urban technologies and services – see https://www.aalto.fi/en/department-of-built-environment/spatial-planning-and-transportation-engineering.
We wish to recruit an ambitious professional to contribute to ground-breaking research and teaching in the field of transportation engineering. The successful candidate will already have:
- a doctoral degree in a relevant discipline (e.g. transportation engineering, transportation science, transport planning, transport studies, transport systems);
- research expertise in planning or managing sustainable urban transport systems, focusing on multiple transport modes (e.g. walking, cycling, public transport);
- strong methodological expertise in quantitative methods, such as data analytics, modelling, evaluation, or optimization; and
- well-developed collaboration skills and an excellent command of English.
During the selection procedure, preference will be given to candidates who have one or more of the following:
- a research profile which crosses sectoral boundaries (e.g. land use, energy, health, ICT)
- a strong interest in sustainable urban transport systems in Nordic and European contexts
- experience in acquiring academic competitive research funding
- experience of research cooperation with the public sector, private sector or NGOs
- a strong academic network
- scientific awards and recognitions
- teaching experience and qualifications in pedagogy
- experience of supervising master’s theses or doctoral research
After recruitment, the successful candidate will be expected to:
- initiate innovative research projects on sustainable urban transportation engineering
- supervise doctoral researchers and produce high-quality research published in peer-reviewed journals
- disseminate research results, enhance the international visibility of Aalto University, the School of Engineering and the Department of Built Environment, and engage with society at large
- collaborate with different stakeholders, as well as with colleagues in Aalto University and across the global community; and
- provide high-quality teaching, typically around 15 ECTS per year, particularly in the MSc programmes in Spatial Planning and Transportation Engineering (SPT) and Sustainable Urban Mobility Transitions (EIT).

- Five most significant publications, submitted in full-text electronic form.
- Research portfolio, describing the applicant’s previous research, their future research plans, and an overview of emerging issues in the field (max 5 pages).
- Teaching statement, summarising the applicant’s approach to teaching and learning, previous teaching experience, and previous activities related to curriculum development (max 2 pages).

Aalto University will use external reviewers to support the evaluation of applicants during the recruitment process. Based on the application materials and external evaluations, the Departmental Committee will choose the most suitable applicants to visit the Department of Built Environment and deliver teaching demonstrations. Shortlisted candidates will be required to submit a teaching portfolio at a later stage in the recruitment process.
