The Department of German Studies at the University of Vienna is the largest research and teaching center in Austria, covering the fields of German language and literatures. The core areas are Modern German Literature, Medieval German Language and Literature, Germanic Linguistics, German as a Foreign and Second Language, and German Teaching Methodology. More than 5000 students are enrolled.

Your workplace:

The Senior Lecturer position is assigned to the area of German Linguistics, whose research and teaching focus is on the German language in its entirety. Special areas of the Linguistics are: Research into contemporary German, the modern and older language history of German, sociolinguistics and variationist linguistics (with a focus on the German language in Austria), language contact and multilingualism research, digital linguistics, areal linguistics, pragmatics, linguistic cultural analysis, political linguistics, media linguistics, text and discourse linguistics, language attitudes and perception, language reflection, academic communication and history. The aforementioned focal points take into account different structural levels (phonology, morphology, syntax and lexis). 

As a Senior Lecturer, you will primarily be involved in teaching in the area of linguistics, where you will be responsible for courses in the Bachelor and Master of Education for German as a teaching subject as well as the Bachelor and Master of German Philology. 

In the event of a positive evaluation at the end of the fixed-term period of 4 years, the position will be changed into a permanent position. 

The employment level of 22.8 hours/week includes an average teaching obligation of 8 semester hours per week of academic teaching. 

Your future tasks:

You actively participate in scientific teaching, research & administration, which means:

  • You are actively involved in linguistic teaching, research and administration, which means: 
  • You will independently teach courses in the Bachelor´s and Master´s degree programs
  • The employment level of 22.8 hours/week includes an average teaching obligation of 8 semester hours per week of academic teaching. 
  • You will make an active contribution to the (further) development of course and examination formats. 
  • The ongoing reception of the current state of science as well as further didactic training and the assumption of research tasks during non-teaching periods are expected. 
  • In addition, the assumption of administrative activities, especially in the administration of teaching, is part of the job profile. 

Preconditions for an application / terms of admission:

  • Completed PhD with a focus on German linguistics or a linguistic specialization with a focus on the German language
  • Research and publication achievements in the field of German linguistics with a focus on grammar, variationist linguistics, sociolinguistics, language acquisition and/or multilingualism research 
  • Several years of independent and broad-based university teaching experience in the field of German linguistics
  • Enthusiasm for passing on knowledge and for university teaching 
  • IT skills and competencies to use digital teaching/learning opportunities 
  • Excellent knowledge of German (C1 level) 
  • Very good teamwork and social skills
