We are delighted to welcome applications for a research post in the area of understanding the impact of extreme events on individuals’ hospitalisation, all-cause mortality and long-term outcomes, as part of the project on Extreme Temperature and Health OutcomeS (ETHOS), funded by the National Environmental Research Council (NERC).

The project, led by Professor Justin Sheffield, aims to transform our understanding of temperature-health relationships in the most vulnerable, but under-evidenced, population groups and identify environmental and community-based approaches to reduce risks under current and future climates. Through this research, the project will develop new knowledge and tools for risk assessment of temperature events and targeted interventions at different spatial and temporal scales, with a focus on groups that are disproportionately affected.

This research position sits within a work package which aims to understand the impact of extreme events on hospitalisation, all-cause mortality, and long-term outcomes in a representative sample of adults with multiple long-term conditions, at national and local level, and identify high-risk and vulnerable groups. The post will be based in the School of Geography and Environmental Science, within the Faculty of Environmental and Life Sciences (FELS). The work is led by Dr Rebecca Collins (School of Geography and Environmental Science) and Proessor Athina Vlachantoni (Department of Gerontology, Faculty of Social Sciences), both Co-Investigators on the project. You will be part of a supportive group including other Research Fellows, and other Faculty members, both within Southampton and partner institutions.
