About the Programme

Fully-funded PhD programmes

The European University Institute (EUI) offers well-structured doctoral programmes allowing you to develop your intellectual curiosity and enabling original research. Approximately 130 scholarships covering tuition fees and providing a monthly grant are available every year across our four departments: Economics, History, Law, and Political and Social Sciences.

Doctoral Programme in Historyand Civilisation

The Doctoral Programme in History and Civilisation at the EUI examines Europe’s history and its relationship to the world. It pushes our researchers to think beyond boundaries and study global connections within early modern and modern European history and explore transnational and comparative European history.

In the first and second years, doctoral researchers study historiographical and methodological issues and focus on an in-depth exploration of selected central themes of European history. In the third and fourth years, researchers focus on their individual research and are invited to present the results of their work at seminars and workshops.

The call for applications opens in November, for admission the following September. Please apply online by 31 January.
