We are looking for an enthusiastic and ambitious researcher with experience in protein biochemistry to work under the supervision of Dr Andrew Lawrence.
The aim of the project is to investigate the biosynthesis of 5,6-dimethylbenzimidazole (DMB), the unusual base that distinguishes cobalamin as an essential mammalian vitamin (B12) from over twenty other non-active forms of cobamide. It was recently discovered that the pathway requires two B12-dependent radical SAM enzymes which raises the “catch 22” question of whether cobalamin is required for its own synthesis. The successful candidate will investigate the structure and function of several SAM dependent enzymes involved in this pathway. You will have excellent skills in molecular biology, protein production and purification, as well as in enzyme assay. Experience in HPLC-MS, NMR, protein crystallography or characterisation of air-sensitive proteins is desirable.
For additional information or informal enquiries, contact Dr Andrew Lawrence, a.lawrence@southampton.ac.uk.
Please include a CV and covering letter in your application.
Applications will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon completion of PhD. Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.
