About the Role

Reporting to and working closely with the Director and Associate Director of Strategic Operations, the School Operations Manager supports Heads of School in preparing, implementing, and monitoring strategic and operational plans for the School and Institute.

You will foster effective relationships with academic and professional staff, as well as key personnel in the Faculty Senior Management team, ensuring alignment with Faculty and University objectives.

The role involves representing the Schools in operational matters with internal and external partners and stakeholders. Additionally, the School Operations Manager oversees the efficient delivery of support services and leads professional staff in providing excellent service to all stakeholders. 

This role will support both the School of Physics and the School of Mathematics and Statistics.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Collaborate and contribute to the School's strategic planning processes, as required. 
  • Work closely with the Head of School in the development and implementation of the School's strategic initiatives.
  • Design and implementation of the School's operational planning processes, monitor progress throughout the year, evaluate outcomes and make recommendations for change.
  • Assist in the development of an integrated resources plan for the School, encompassing workforce planning, academic services, infrastructure, and responsible financial and asset management.
  • Integrate and oversee the School's administrative functions, establish clear directions, common goals and open communication by fostering a work culture that supports the ongoing growth and development of the School and Institute.
  • Oversee management and delivery of support services of the School.

Who We Are Looking For

You will bring a strong understanding of the higher education environment and its strategic direction, along with substantial experience in financial and operational management within a university setting.

You will also have:

  • A relevant postgraduate qualification and management experience, along with proven management expertise, or an equivalent combination of experience in a university environment.
  • High level interpersonal and communication skills, including a proven capacity to build and maintain effective and productive relationships with a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the higher education environment including its strategic direction.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and align operational plans and establish and implement procedures and initiatives to enable delivery of plans.

This role requires that the successful candidate must undergo and maintain an up-to-date Working with Children Check. This is essential to guarantee a secure environment for all individuals at the University. The University of Melbourne's School of Physics is one of Australia's leading Physics Schools. It has achieved this status through the high quality of its research and teaching programs. The School offers a wide range of physics subjects to undergraduate and postgraduate students, and performs research in the following areas: Astrophysics, Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics, Experimental Condensed Matter Physics, Experimental Particle Physics, Materials Science, Physical Biosciences, Theoretical Condensed Matter Physics and Theoretical Particle Physics. Currently some 30 academics, 51 research-only staff, more than 95 postgraduate students and 72 associates supported by 23 professional staff make up the School of Physics.

The University of Melbourne's School of Mathematics and Statistics is one of Australia's leading mathematics and statistics schools. It has achieved this status through the high quality of its research and teaching programs. The School offers a wide range of subjects to undergraduate and postgraduate students and is involved in aspects of community life that impact on the interests of the School and the discipline. The School of Mathematics and Statistics has a total of 70 continuing teaching and/or research staff, 34 research-only staff and consultants, 16 academic specialists, and 16 support staff. There are approximately 90 Research Higher Degree and 278 Coursework Master of Science students.
