Salary: Full time starting salary is normally in the range of £37,337 to £44,906 per annum, with potential progression up to £51,298 per annum

Role Description

The Centre for Defence Chemistry has been working on propellants, explosives and pyrotechnic research for decades. We are interested in all aspects of defence manufacturing, vulnerability, combustion, and life assessment of energetic materials.

About the Role

You will contribute to research in development of insensitive explosive formulations using a wide range of both conventional and processing techniques.

You will be responsible for:

  • Small scale assessment of novel explosive formulations, assessing compatibility, hazard and thermal properties
  • Investigating a range of process methods and developing safe process work
  • Conducting trials on processing methods to study the effects of changing processing parameters on the properties of the final product
  • Carrying out pressing studies on novel compositions
    • Establishing and maintain an international reputation in areas which are related to energetic materials
    • Working closely with colleagues and making effective use of the facilities

You will also be expected to work on existing formulation research contracts and support several projects run within the Centre working closely with colleagues and making effective use of the facilities.

About You

You will have a PhD (or nearing completion) in a chemistry related subject area and experience of working with energetic materials.  Experience of using a range of analytical skills and techniques, evidence of collaboration work with other research groups is essential.  You will have an understanding of the contemporary challenges facing the defence sector in the UK and further afield.
