Your place of work:

The Department for Slavonic Studies is looking for a PhD student with a didactic research project in the field of Slavic languages (with a focus on South or East Slavic languages). We offer you the opportunity to pursue your dissertation project intensively, gain initial teaching experience and conduct independent research in a stimulating environment at the largest German-speaking Department for Slavonic Studies, where teachers for the subjects Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian, Polish, Russian, Slovak, Slovenian and Czech are trained.

The advertised position of a university assistant ("prae doc") is to be filled on 1 March 2025. The advertisement is for 3 years, whereby the employment relationship is initially limited to 1.5 years and is automatically extended to a total of 3 years, unless the employer submits a declaration of non-renewal after a maximum of 12 months.

Your future tasks:

You actively participate in research, teaching & administration, which means:

  • You are working on your dissertation and its completion. We expect you to conclude your dissertation agreement within 12-18 months.
  • You will be involved in research projects and scientific studies in the field of subject didactics.
  • You will carry out your own study under supervision (conception, implementation, survey, analysis).
  • You will contribute to publications / scientific articles / lectures.
  • You hold courses independently to the extent of the provisions of the collective agreement.
  • You will take on administrative tasks in research and teaching.
  • You will support the organization of meetings, conferences, symposia and student support.

This is part of your personality:

  • Completed Master's/Diploma in Slavic Studies or a Slavic Teacher Training Programme
  • Experience in teaching (language, also subject didactics desired)
  • Knowledge of the Austrian school system
  • Very good knowledge of Russian or Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian or Slovenian as well as the corresponding regional studies
  • Organizational skills
  • Communication talent and ability to work in a team
  • High level of written and oral communication skills in German and English
  • IT user knowledge

Also desirable are

  • International experience
  • Experience with online and digitally supported learning
  • Knowledge of university processes and structures, experience in university self-administration
  • Basic knowledge of other Slavic languages as well as non-Slavic foreign languages
