Wondering why you should join us? The University of Vienna hosts one of the most internationally visible management research environments in Europe, with their faculty constantly being ranked among the top of all universities in the German-speaking world, and belonging to the finest in their field internationally - emblematic of the continuous aspiration to add valuable insights to their academic field.
Your personal scope of action:
The Strategic Management Subject Area within the Department commenced its operations in 2012. In steady state, our team consists of approximately 10 people from four different nationalities. Jointly, we investigate questions pertaining to strategic decision-making in organizations and related performance implications. We are particularly interested in behavioral aspects pertaining to organizational design decisions relevant to firms operating in (technologically) innovative environments. We are agnostic to methods and pursue formally analytical, simulation-based, ethnographic, large-scale empirical as well as experimental techniques, with a focus on the latter two.
Our publications have appeared in the finest management outlets, such as the Academy of Management Review, Management Science, Organization Science, Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes, Production and Operations Management, Research Policy, and the Strategic Management Journal, to mention but a few. Our research was funded by several agencies, and we regularly host conferences and seminars featuring colleagues from all over the globe.
We are currently looking for a dedicated PhD student to join our team. Find more information about the Strategic Management area and its members here: http://strategy.univie.ac.at
What you will be doing:
In addition to their research work, candidates assist and participate in administrative tasks and teaching activities (teaching due to extent regulations of wage agreement) of the strategy area at all levels.
What is expected from you:
Applicants should have completed their Master/Diploma degrees (or be very near completion) by the time of their application. We are looking for graduates from:
- Renowned management programs: e.g. M.Sc. in Business
or
- Adjacent disciplines such as economics, psychology, engineering or computer sciences: e.g. M.Sc. in economics, M.Sc. in industrial engineering, M.Sc. in information management, M.Sc. in psychology
Independent of their background, all applicants should be excited about pursuing a career in academic research in the social sciences. A particular interest for the field of strategy and organizational design is a definite plus, while specific prior training is not a prerequisite. We are looking forward to receiving your application if you are:
- a top graduate (belong to the best 10% of their graduating classes)
- have a strong quantitative background
- have an interest in acquiring methodological skills in areas such as formal (mathematical) modelling and/or (quantitative) empirical testing (conducting experimental research and/or large-scale field studies).
As an international group of researchers seeking to publish in leading journals, we rely on candidates being fluent in English (written and spoken). Relevant study experience in a (native) english speaking environment is therefore a strong plus. Prior teaching experience is an advantage. Knowledge of German is not required.
What we offer you:
Successful candidates will join the Strategy Area as research and teaching associates
- on a 30 hours/week contract (full time, i.e. 40 hours/week, gross monthly salary of the B1 salary group according to the Collective Bargaining Agreement amounts to EUR 3.578,80; In the case of a normal weekly working time of less than 40 hours the salary shall be prorated.)
- and will be enrolled in the department's PhD program in Management (specializing in Strategic Management: https://strategy.univie.ac.at/phd/)
- envisaged starting date: 1 March 2025 (for a total duration of 4 years; Initially limited to 1.5 years, the employment relationship is automatically extended to 4 years if the employer does not terminate it within the first 12 months by submitting a non-extension declaration.)
Our program is modelled after leading US business schools' doctoral programs and comprises intensive coursework at the postgraduate level, research presentations, as well as drafting the actual dissertational thesis. While the program's primary goal is to prepare candidates for a career in international academe, it also increases the candidates' attractiveness to employers in the private sector (consulting, industry). For further information about the PhD program please visit https://phd-management.univie.ac.at/.
Candidates may also be given the chance to additionally enroll in the pan-disciplinary Oskar-Morgenstern-Doctoral-School (https://oskar-morgenstern-doctoral-school.univie.ac.at/), providing them with
- additional funding for research, and
- the possibility to learn from and with students from adjacent disciplines.
Outside the core doctoral program, the Strategy Area will actively nurture research by its members, aimed at making a contribution at the highest international levels and preparing them to succeed in the international academic job market. Students from our group have received offers for junior faculty positions from leading European universities or went off to leading business schools in the US.
How to apply easily:
No final decision will be taken before 30 October 2024. Afterwards we may have a rolling dead-line if we are still looking for the right candidate.
