Your personal sphere of influence

The Department of Communication, a subunit of the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Vienna is one of the largest and strongest research-oriented departments for communication science worldwide. The advertised position is situated within the Advertising & Media Psychology Research Group, led by Professor Jörg Matthes. The Advertising & Media Psychology Research Group deals with the impact of modern media environments on people's thinking, behavior, and opinions, using both quantitative as well as qualitative methods to conduct their research.

The position is advertised to the extent of 30 hours/week (75%) for a period of four years, with the position to be filled as soon as possble upon agreement.

Your future tasks

You actively participate in research, teaching & administration, which means:

  • You actively collaborate in the area of empirical content, reception and effects research, especially advertising research and/or polical and/or environmental communication.
  • You publish your research in international highly-ranked journals.
  • You present your research at national and international conferences, meetings, and symposia.
  • You actively engage in applying for third-party funded projects.
  • You hold courses independently within the scope of the provisions of the collective bargaining agreement.
  • You participate in evaluation measures and in quality assurance.
  • The signing of a doctoral thesis agreement within 12-18 months of employment is expected.
  • Contribution to the department administration is expected.

This is part of your personality

  • You have obtained a completed MA / Magister degree in Communication Science or a related discipline.
  • You have in-depth knowledge of methods of empirical social research, especially quantitative methods and statistical data analysis.
  • You are interested in an international research orientation.
  • You have obtained didactic competence.
  • Ideally, you have experience in research-oriented university teaching.
  • Excellent computer literacy
  • Excellent command of written and spoken English
  • Ability to work in teams and distinct organizational skills

Fixed-term contract and fair salary: The basic monthly gross salary for this advertised position to an extent of 75% currently (2024) is € 2.684,10 (based on a full-time equivalent of € 3.578,80) and will be paid 14 times a year for a period of four years (i.e., the duration of the contract). The basic salary increases if we can credit prior professional experience.

The employment duration is four years. Initially limited to 1.5 years, the employment relationship is automatically extended to four years if the employer does not terminate it within the first twelve months by submitting a non-extension declaration.
