With the introduction of the new University of Sydney Enterprise Agreement 2023-26, the University has committed to establishing and advertising new continuing education-focused (EF) and teaching and research academic positions across the Faculty of Medicine and Health.

You will have the opportunity to make a significant contribution to teaching in your field of expertise while you also continue to build substantial research contribution, expertise, connections, and impact. As part of this role, you will also contribute to the governance, leadership, and engagement work of your employing school.

Over time, staff appointed to these roles will be supported to engage with professional development opportunities to build their capability to lead change and improvement in teaching and research at the University.

For the Sydney Horizon Educators, there will be access to up to AUD$30K to support education­ related activities, including education-related research and education-related professional development and learning.

The aims of these education focused roles are to attract and retain the best and brightest emerging academics, within a specialised category of academic engagement. Positions in this opportunity are for talented educators with a passion for, and demonstrated excellence in, educational practice and innovation, and research capability (in disciplinary and/or education-related research). This newly-recruited group of educators will support an uplift in the teaching capability and student experience at the University of Sydney, while also developing as leaders in the education space at the University.

You will have the opportunity to make a significant contribution to teaching and learning design, delivery, and evaluation in your specialised field while you also contribute to research in relation to your discipline and/or your educational practice. Sydney School of Nursing

  • Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Social Sciences/Clinical Education Nursing/Paediatric
  • Nursing/Mental Health Nursing (Education Focused) (Camperdown Campus), Level B/C

The University of Sydney Susan Wakil School of Nursing and Midwifery (Sydney Nursing School)  is the school of choice to nurture global citizens in health and wellbeing. We are currently ranked #1 in Australia and #14 globally in the QS World University Rankings by Subject. As a leader in nursing research and education, Sydney Nursing School produces graduates who possess critical thinking skills and knowledge of local and global health issues to provide exceptional care for individuals and communities. We are also home to the Discipline of Nutrition and Dietetics and the Broken Hill University Department of Rural Health.

We are seeking two (2) education focused full-time or part-time academics at the level of Lecturer or Senior Lecturer with deep expertise and passion for teaching in any of the following areas: mental health nursing, social science, clinical education nursing or paediatric nursing.

You will have a PhD in nursing, public health or an academic field relevant to the discipline, including a qualification and extensive experience in this area of nursing. A current AHPRA registration (Nurse) is a requirement for this position. You will make a significant contribution to high-quality teaching and innovative learning practices, curriculum design and evaluation in nursing. The successful applicant will also contribute to the Nursing School’s research strategy, through independent research activity, and/ or involvement in interdisciplinary grants and projects.

Sydney School of Public Health

  • Lecturer in Health Policy and Planning (Teaching and Research) (Camperdown Campus), Level B

The University of Sydney’s Health Policy and Planning Program is at the forefront of teaching, research, and action to drive policy change. We seek to appoint a highly-motivated Lecturer in Health Policy and Planning to join the Menzies Centre for Health Policy and Health EconomicsThe successful applicant will make a significant contribution to our curriculum design, development, and delivery of postgraduate Health Policy and Planning courses, as well as grow his or her own program of research, as part of our vibrant Menzies Centre team. Our disciplines include: health policy, health economics, social and behavioural sciences, dietetics, health systems, political economy, and public health.

We are therefore looking for candidates who have:

  • Demonstrated capacity to develop and teach units of study relevant to health policy, health economics, health systems, research methods, evidence informed policy or practice or other courses in the social sciences
  • Deep understanding of linkages between political systems and their influence or impact on the health of populations.

Sydney Medical School

  • Senior Lecturer in General Practice (Education Focused) (Camperdown, Westmead, Hornsby), Level C

The Senior Lecturer in the General Practice Clinical School (GPCS) will join a growing team involved in teaching, research, and engagement across three Sydney precincts (Camperdown, Westmead, Hornsby). The GPCS also works closely with academic and professional colleagues in three rural clinical school sites (Orange/Dubbo, Lismore, and Broken Hill).

This Education Focused role will contribute to leadership and coordination of general practice curriculum, assessment and teaching in the MD program. This will include supervision or co-supervision of academic GP registrars, as well as representing the GP Clinical School on relevant education-focused internal and external committees.

The successful applicant will also contribute to the GP Clinical School’s research strategy, through independent research activity, co/supervision of MD research students and academic GP registrars and/ or involvement in interdisciplinary grants and projects.

  • Associate Professor in Medicine/Surgery (Education Focused Specialist Practitioner) (Camperdown) Level D

Since 1856 The Sydney Medical School (SMS) has been dedicated to developing caring, clinically-outstanding, research-capable, and globally-aware graduates who become leaders in their chosen professions.

We advocate for and take a leadership role in contributing to high-quality healthcare and wellbeing. Our staff play a major role in the provision of healthcare in NSW and in a number of countries in our region. They are leading clinicians who are actively involved in the evolution of care and hold key roles in government and non-government organisations, hospitals, and other major health providers.

SMS is keen to make senior specialist medical/surgical practitioner academic appointments at Level D with an option of full or part time in education focused roles to develop and implement strategies to improve the quality of education and enhance student experience in the Master of Medicine/Master of Surgery postgraduate coursework programs.  The appointee/s is/are expected to provide leadership to the postgraduate coursework programs as relevant to their specialist background and educational expertise. We are seeking senior clinicians with significant educational experience either in a university or hospital environment and expect successful candidates to make a significant contribution to curriculum design, development, and delivery of our postgraduate coursework programs to provide transformative healthcare education.

The successful applicant will also contribute to the educational research and innovation program , through independent research activity, co/supervision of PGCW Advanced Masters research students dissertation/independent research unit students and involvement in internal and external research grant and other funding opportunities for educational research projects.

Sydney Dental School (SDS)

As an academic school within the Faculty of Medicine and Health, SDS is consistently ranked as one of Australia's top dental schools. Through our delivery of integrated research, clinical training, and professional education, students benefit from the opportunity to gain experience in a diverse range of clinical facilities, to interact with dental and other health professionals, and develop an understanding of real-world challenges in oral health and healthcare. 

  • Senior Lecturer in Periodontics (Education Focused) Level C

The Sydney Dental School (SDS) are seeking a highly skilled Periodontal Specialist to join our esteemed institution. The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications and experience:

  • Specialist Training: Completion of advanced specialist training in periodontology
  • Currently hold or eligible to hold AHPRA registration as a dentist or dental specialist
  • Completed PhD or near completion within a relevant field
  • Clinical Expertise: Extensive experience in periodontics and dental implants, including:
    • Diagnosis and treatment of periodontal and peri-implant diseases
    • Non-surgical and surgical management of these conditions
    • Soft and hard tissue surgery/augmentation
    • Planning and placement of dental implants
  • Teaching Experience: Proven experience in teaching at both postgraduate and undergraduate levels, with a focus on postgraduate education.
  • Research Involvement: A strong background in research related to periodontology and dental implants.
  • Leadership in Education: Ability to lead in educational innovation, curriculum design, and review to ensure exceptional educational outcomes.
  • Governance and Engagement: Contributions to the governance, leadership, and development of the periodontology program at the Sydney Dental School.

They will also have demonstrated ability to conduct research and (at all levels, but particularly at Level C and D) a willingness to develop a program of education-related research over time.

With the teaching and research candidates, we are looking for candidates who can make a significant contribution to teaching and learning design, delivery, and evaluation while continuing to build their research contribution, expertise and impact. They will have a demonstrated ability to interact effectively with students, facilitating and guiding their learning in research, theory and laboratory sessions. They will also have the capacity to build a significant research program over time, obtaining competitive funding as needed to support their research work.

We are therefore looking for Sydney Horizon Educators and Teaching and Research academics who have:

  • a PhD or nearly-completed PhD in an academic field relevant to the discipline
  • (for education focused) experience in assessment, feedback and learning by design
  • (for education focused) experience in contributing to outstanding educational design, delivery, evaluation and outcomes
  • (for teaching and research) a record of attracting competitive, external funding to support their research
  • (for teaching and research) a track record of high-quality research outputs appropriate to the discipline that is on an upward trajectory
  • a developing network of relationships with key academic, industry or professional institutions partners and stakeholders
  • demonstrated experience in supervising or mentoring others and/or coordinating team activities
  • a demonstrated commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching
  • sound experience of teaching and learning, and the ability to contribute to teaching at undergraduate, honours and postgraduate levels in lecture, tutorial and practical settings.
  • proven experience in designing, implementing and evaluating teaching and learning initiatives
  • a record of excellent teaching, learning, and assessment practice in a tertiary environment, as evidenced through student and supervisor feedback
  • the capacity to engage students and enable a supportive, inclusive learning environment
  • a high level of interpersonal skills including the ability to work collaboratively with colleagues
  • the ability to work collaboratively with other staff, including professional staff, and foster principles of equity, diversity and inclusion
  • high-level written and verbal communication skills.

Senior Lecturers who, in addition to the above can demonstrate:

  • their knowledge and understanding of the key, strategic, education-related issues in the higher education sector and/or the University
  • (for education focused) their experience as an effective unit, course or program coordinator or director (especially for large classes), as evidenced by student and staff feedback 
  • (for teaching and research) demonstrated record of driving a program of peer-reviewed research, creative work, or scholarship published or disseminated in high-quality outlets for their discipline some experience in people leadership within the higher education sector 
  • significant capability in leadership, service, governance, and engagement.

Associate Professor who, in addition to the above can demonstrate:

  • service, governance, and engagement through their prior work in university and/or complex non-university organisations
  • (for teaching and research) their ability to attract nationally competitive research funding, particularly from the Australian Research Council
  • (for education focused) a sustained record of excellence in teaching and learning design and practice.
  • (for education focused) leadership of curriculum development than enhances student learning in the discipline curriculum
  • extensive experience conducting original research and engaging in scholarly activity.
  • extensive experience supervising and mentoring others
  • a wide network of established relationships with academic, industry and professional partners and stakeholders
  • (for education focused) their ability to obtain competitive grant funding for their education scholarship
  • their leadership within the higher education sector, including demonstrated success in supervising and/or mentoring others (including honours students) to achieve career progression or professional advancement
  • establishment of relationships with key academic, industry and professional institutions, partners and stakeholders that can be leveraged to enhance the standing of education in the discipline, School, Faculty and University.
