The University of Sydney welcomes applications for a Professor of Indigenous Cultural and Creative Industries (Teaching and Research) in the School of Art, Communication and English, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.

The School of Art, Communication and English (SACE) is recognised nationally and internationally for its research strengths in literary studies, creative writing, performance, visual arts, art history, film studies, communication and media practice. The School has significant resources in terms of students, staff, and facilities for the production of a range of forms of culture, including television and video, podcasting, theatre making and artworks.

The Professor of Indigenous Cultural and Creative Industries role is designed for a recognised leader in the creative and cultural industries, or a senior academic within the areas for which SACE is recognised. The position will work closely with First Nations leadership within the university in order to drive priorities and achieve ambitions under the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Employment Plan 2022-2024 and the University's One Sydney, Many People Strategy currently being renewed. Working across all SACE disciplines, this role focuses on providing guidance and leadership as to how the resources of the School can best be used to support decolonisation and First Nations sovereignty in Australia. The role will build strong connections with Indigenous communities and peak Indigenous creative organisations. It may involve working on embedding First Nations histories, cultural protocols, Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property, and ways of doing, being and sharing knowledge into the Faculty’s curricula, and may also provide leadership for Indigenous-led research in the School. The successful incumbent may be involved in leading school-based projects including curriculum revision, teaching, research and engagement and will play a key role in the development of a University First Nations’ creative plan.

As a leading authority within their industry or discipline and/or with an international reputation for excellence, the Professor of Indigenous Cultural and Creative Industries will contribute to the leadership and strategic direction of the university by participating in collegial governance and decision-making, fostering excellence, guiding academic staff and students, and actively contributing to research, scholarship, policy development, and innovation within and beyond the university.

About you

Applicants should demonstrate the following criteria, and include a response to each of the Selection Criteria as part of their application:

  • Identify as Aboriginal and/ or Torres Strait Islander
  • Deep knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultural and Creative Industries and practices
  • A doctorate in any of the disciplines in the School (Art History, Creative Arts, Film Studies, Theatre and Performance Studies, English and Writing or Media and Communications), or equivalent professional experience in First Nations creative and cultural industries
  • Recognised leadership in the cultural and creative industries and/or proven international standing for academic excellence demonstrated through original, innovative and distinguished contributions to scholarship and research
  • Demonstrated community engagement and experience in leading impactful collaborations, projects and/or strategic initiatives 
  • Demonstrated leadership skills, including undertaking significant administrative and/or committee positions
  • Desirable: an ability to coordinate and engage in high-quality teaching and learning experiences which meet the university’s expectations and standards for education.

Term and remuneration

Full-time, continuing position.

The successful candidate will be offered a competitive remuneration package commensurate with the responsibilities of the position and the candidate’s relevant experience and qualifications.
