About the opportunity

The University of Sydney is seeking a Research Fellow / Senior Research Fellow in Medical Statistics or Biostatistics to support the expanding Cities and Planetary Health transdisciplinary research portfolio in the School of Architecture, Design and Planning (ADP) led by Professor Thomas Astell-Burt.

The post holder will mainly contribute to research on cardiometabolic health and/or mental health. Skills and experience in the design and statistical evaluation of randomised controlled trials are essential. Advanced statistical analysis skills in cohort studies and of data from wearable technologies (e.g., accelerometers, global positioning systems activity trackers) is highly desirable. Appointment to Level C will be expected to lead studies, write publications, and apply for grants/fellowships that complement existing research strengths in the team.

The position will contribute to the development and delivery of teaching on undergraduate and/or postgraduate courses, microcredentials and statistics clinics to provide statistical support to researchers and PhD students. Experience in the design and analysis of randomised trials (e.g., conducting sample size calculations and mixed models) and/or cohort studies using advanced statistical methods (e.g., growth-curve multilevel models) is essential. Experience in avant-garde approaches for randomised trials (e.g., factorial designs) is highly desirable.

This post is full time and is expected to work at in the Camperdown Campus for most of the time to contribute to the growth of the team and the wider community in ADP.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

• conduct and oversee the delivery of high quality quantitative research within the Cities and Planetary Health research portfolio led by Professor Thomas Astell-Burt using advanced statistical methods (e.g., multilevel modelling of large linked longitudinal data)
• provide expert and timely input into study design of projects/proposals (e.g., power calculations)
• lead and co-author high quality research papers for publication in excellent journals
• write research proposals and generate external research funding as lead investigator with members of the Cities and Planetary Health team, and as a contributor to projects led by other team members
• manage research projects including budgeting, convening meetings, preparing funder reports
• develop and deliver teaching on undergraduate and/or postgraduate courses and microcredentials on statistics and related topics relevant to the Cities and Planetary Health team
• lead statistics clinics to provide methodological support to researchers and PhD students
• supervise and mentor higher degree research students and student-led projects
• engage stakeholders across all stages of the research process, including co-design activities and dissemination in various academic and non-academic formats.

About you

• an established track record in the field of statistics (randomised controlled trials, analysis of linked data, longitudinal studies) as demonstrated by meaningful contributions to a range of projects and publications as lead and co-author
• PhD involving statistics, and other qualifications either in statistics or in degrees in which it is typically taught as a core subject (e.g., Master of Statistics, Master of Public Health)
• strong capacities to conduct statistical analyses, as demonstrated by publication in excellent journals
• mastery of relevant software for data management (e.g., SAS, R, Stata) and proven capability to conduct statistical analyses in relevant software packages (e.g., multilevel modelling in MLwIN)
• proven ability to design, implement, and evaluate teaching activities (including methods clinics)
• be enthusiastic about advancing statistical research as applied to cities and planetary health topics.
