About the opportunity
The vision of the research group is to develop a broad and highly innovative program of research using state-of- the-art and internationally unique non-invasive methodologies related to heart disease such as cardiovascular MRI, CT, echocardiography, nuclear imaging, and ECG. This is done to better understand the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms, improve diagnosis, test new therapies, and ultimately improve health.
The Postdoctoral Research Fellow position within the CMR Group at the University of Sydney, located at the Kolling Institute, Royal North Shore Hospital, is a research-only academic position performing clinical research. The main aim of the research is to better understand the pathophysiology and improve diagnosis and treatment of heart disease using non-invasive methodologies, CMR in particular.

The successful applicant is expected to make independent or original contributions to the research effort within their field of expertise and to the organisational unit, or to the interdisciplinary area of which they are a part. The position requires a highly motivated, energetic, and conscientious person, with postgraduate level qualifications and an excellent track record in research. The incumbent will be located at the Kolling Institute, Royal North Shore Hospital. Please note - Start date to be agreed upon, but at the latest by December 2024 and salary to be commensurate with experience.
Your key responsibilities will be to:
- Work under the supervision of academic staff at Level C (corresponding to Senior Lecturer) or above, with an increasing degree of autonomy as the research academic staff member gains skills and experience
- typically conduct research/scholarly activities under limited supervision, either independently, or as a member of a team
- at times, undertake limited teaching, supervise at undergraduate levels, and/or publish the results of the research conducted as sole author or in collaboration
- undertake administration primarily relating to staff member's activities at the University
- maintain quality, standards and excellence in all research activities and outputs.
- significantly contribute to successful applications for competitive research grants and/ or funding to deliver research impact
- develop research collaborations which will ultimately result in knowledge or technology transfer leading to commercialisation, improved policy or practice and/or enhancements to industry, the profession or the community
- support and supervise research students.
About you
The successful applicant must, prior to commencement of the position, have completed medical school. In addition, have completed or be near completion of a PhD or have equivalent experience with multiple first author original research publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals. The applicant must have superb written and verbal English communication skills with strong public speaking skills.
It is strongly desired that the successful applicant also has:
- Clinical and/or research experience, including technical development in cardiac diagnostic methods, including magnetic resonance imaging, echocardiography, computed tomography, nuclear imaging, electrocardiography, and/or cardiopulmonary exercise testing,
- clinical and/or research experience in the area of heart disease, including coronary artery disease, coronary microvascular dysfunction, heart failure, ischemic heart disease, cardiomyopathies, and/or diastolic dysfunction, and,
- have completed a PhD or have equivalent experience with multiple first author original research publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals
- proven track record of impactful research and publications (or other output)
- experience in funding applications and grant funded project management
- has experience as a mentor for junior and potential scholars as demonstrated by supervision, mentoring, and support
- demonstrated capacity to communicate effectively across a range of media and forums.
