Description of the position:
CeMESS, the Centre for Microbiology and Environmental Systems Science, is looking for an excellent theoretical ecologist and/or mathematical modeler to investigate fundamental principles of microbiomes across different host and environmental systems. The successful candidate will work within the Cluster of Excellence ‘Microbiomes drive Planetary Health’ and shall develop conceptual models for microbiomes based on ecological theory, contribute to experimental design and align experimental data with modelling in the following fields: i) unifying existing growth theories and embedding fundamental principles of growth into ecological theory. ii) microbial interaction network reconstruction and analysis and iii) adaptation and response of complex microbiomes to perturbations and oscillating environmental conditions.
The position is limited to three years and is planned to be filled from 01.10.2024.
Your future tasks:
Active participation in research, teaching & administration, which means:
- Mathematical modelling of microbiomes
- Take on a leading role in integrating and coordinating theoretical modelling with experimental work within a diverse research consortium
- Work closely together with experimental microbial ecologists to design experiments for testing model hypotheses
- Analyse experimental datasets and link them to mathematical models
- Employ and further develop microbial co-occurrence network analysis
- Publishing/presenting research in international top journals/conferences
- Support and train young researchers
This is part of your personality:
- PhD Degree in ecology, microbial ecology, biology, physics, mathematics or theoretical ecology
- Experience with mathematical modelling of biological systems
- Advanced programming skills
- Excellent command of written and spoken English
- Willingness and ability to work as part of a diverse and international team
- Excellent communication skills
- Experience with planning, conducting, and analyzing laboratory experiments
- Curious, independent, proactive, and motivated personality
