The University of Newcastle stands as a global Top 200 University with a vision to be a world leading University for our regions. The Looking Ahead Strategic Plan 2020-2025 captures the spirit of looking to the future to imagine and then realise possibilities, enabled by the values of excellence, equity, engagement and sustainability.
Reporting directly to the Pro Vice-Chancellor, College of Engineering, Science and Environment, the University is seeking a new Dean to lead the highly reputable School of Engineering. The Dean of Engineering is a member of the College Executive team and is responsible for delivering on the priority areas of the University and College Strategic Plan, and for providing a clear vision and effective leadership for the School. This includes championing industry engagement and enhancing the School’s focus on research translation and commercialisation to help achieve University ambitions.
The Dean of the School of Engineering will engage with partners to position the School and College as a major driver of quality education and research, delivering innovation and impact in areas of global significance. Growth in global partnerships will also be important, supporting the College and University’s efforts in strategic engagement with high quality international partners in education and research.
The School of Engineering brings together expertise in engineering in four key disciplines; Electrical, Computer Systems and Medical; Civil, Environmental and Surveying; Chemical and Renewable; and Aerospace Systems, Mechanical and Mechatronics, to deliver life ready graduates and transformative and sustainable education solutions across four locations: Newcastle, the Central Coast, Sydney, and Singapore. The School delivers exciting degree programs which reflect industry best practice. Collaborative, state-of-the art facilities for researchers, industry and staff enable impressive research accomplishments.
As Dean of Engineering, you will work closely with the leadership group of the School, College and colleagues across the University to deliver on strategic objectives, while fostering a culture of collaboration, inclusivity and innovation. You will have a proven track record of scholarly achievement in research and teaching, through demonstrated transformational leadership and resource management skills which should be complemented by your ability to inspire and engage with government, industry and community groups.

College of Engineering, Science and Environment
The School of Engineering is one of the most research-intensive Schools within the University contributing substantially to the overall research inputs and outputs of the College and University. This is reflected in the 2018 Excellence in Research in Australia outcomes where Electrical, Civil, Mechanical and Resource engineering FOR codes received an ERA5. In addition, it is rated well above the sector average for quality of overall experience for undergraduate engineering students and for median salaries with more than 90% of our engineering undergraduates finding employment within 4 months of completing their studies.
The University was established to serve the Hunter and Central Coast. The Hunter region is not only Australia’s largest regional economy, but it also has the greatest growth in NSW outside of the Sydney Basin. The region is home to the Newcastle Port, the Williamtown airport and the Williamtown RAAF base as well as developers and manufacturers of a diverse range of technologies and devices. It is rich in natural mineral and water resources, electricity generation capacity and food and wine producers.
The transformation of the Hunter and Central Coast offers many exciting opportunities for research and industrial collaboration including industries focused on infrastructure and resource development. In addition to research collaborations, the School has well-established connections with industry through sponsored undergraduate students and student placements.
