Description
The Division of Arts & Humanities at New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) seeks to appoint an Instructor of Arts Practice in Mixed Media (Open Rank) on a fixed term, three-year contract.
The Instructor of Arts Practice in Mixed Media will be expected to manage and support all aspects of the day-to-day studio operations across multiple key arts practice teaching, learning and research studios (Photo, Print, Painting & Drawing). The role of the position will provide key technical, academic, and administrative support for arts practice-based courses, research and programming with a heavy focus on the BA in Art and Art History and the MFA in Art and Media programs, but inclusive of other undergraduate arts programs that utilize the studios.
The Instructor of Arts Practice in Mixed Media will be required to assume leadership responsibilities, including training and managing student monitors, forecasting budgets, executing procurement processes, developing safety training materials and conducting technical and specialized workshops for students, faculty and staff.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
- Undergraduate degree in technical direction, fine art, design, education, or related field
- Extensive experience managing a multidisciplinary arts practice studio in an educational setting
- Experience with arts practice studio safety program implementation and enforcement
- Excellent planning skills, managing competing demands on resources, personal, and space, whilst at the same time exhibiting patience and flexibility in dealing with changing priorities
- Ability to work with student projects and students’ production needs for course requirements
- Experience in black and white film photographic practice is a plus
- Experience working in an educational setting is preferred
- Regional experience within the GCC is a plus
General Duties
- Act as the first point of contact for the Photo, Print and Mixed Media arts practice-based studios at NYUAD.
- Manage the day-to-day operations of the arts practice studios.
- Maintain clean, well-organized, safe and highly functional studios.
- Ensure arts practice studios are in a safe working order, well stocked, and readily available to students, faculty and staff with a primary focus on supporting teaching, learning and research.
- Cultivate an environment of collaboration, etiquette, and safety across arts practice studios.
- Actively promote wider access to and exploitation of the arts practice studios.
- Hire, train, schedule and supervise student employees to assist in managing day-to-day operations across multiple arts practice studios.
- Assist university stakeholders with arts practice-based studio enhancement projects to ensure efficient in-studio workflows, safe working environments and effective teaching, learning and research requirements are achieved.
- Work closely with key arts faculty stakeholders and academic staff to ensure all aspects of the arts practice studios (photo, print, painting & drawing) needs are being met and kept to a high standard of operations to best position all programs within the division for success.
- Work independently yet collaboratively as a member of Academic Arts Operations which is a larger team of academic staff members supporting programs across the arts with highly specialized, technical and administrative skill sets.
- More broadly, support all educational needs of the facilities, faculty, students, and staff in support of teaching, learning, and research.
Technical:
- Perform safety inspections of tools and equipment on a regularly scheduled and as-needed-to basis.
- Monitor studio workflows to ensure safe utilization and handling of materials, tools and equipment are exercised by students, faculty and staff.
- Assist in the designing and fabricating processes supporting project stakeholders across the arts.
- Provide both curricular and co-curricular technical guidance, workshops and training sessions in support of teaching, learning and research processes promoting overall operational safety within arts practice-based studios.
- Train students, student assistants, faculty and staff on the proper and safe use of photo, print and mixed media equipment, tools, materials and resources.
Academic:
- Act as an integral member of the Academic Arts Operations Team of academic staff supporting all arts programs across the Arts & Humanities Division.
- Work closely with faculty, staff, and students to understand teaching and production goals, ensuring arts practice-based studios are designed and well equipped to meet those needs.
- Work directly with faculty and students to support the successful completion of class assignments and projects.
- Actively support teaching, learning and research through specialized trainings, workshops and technical consultations with students, faculty and staff with a heavy emphasis on the safe usage of tools, equipment, materials and arts practice studio resources both inside and outside of course timings.
- Actively support end-of-semester productions showcasing students’ in-class final projects.
- Support the annual Capstone Festival, representing seniors’ student projects across the arts with a heavy emphasis on projects involving photography, printmaking, painting & drawing and other mixed-media.
- Work closely with art program faculty and academic staff to produce and support art program divisional events, performances, screenings, exhibitions, and other special projects as needed.
- Provide administrative support for off-campus arts-related activities to further assist the teaching, learning and research process including logistical, technical, safety and logistical support for field trips, location-based training, screenings, performances, installations, or any other arts program-related activities.
Operational:
- Asset management and inventory recording.
- Oversee and manage a high level of specialized tool and equipment repair, maintenance and servicing schedules to ensure safe working environments.
- Coordinate with outsourced vendors to service specialized tools and equipment on an as-needed-to basis.
- Managing inventories, ordering classroom and research materials, and receiving deliveries.
- Research vendors, specifications, and pricing; evaluate the practical need for tools, equipment and consumables for purchases to provide recommendations and assist in the coordination process to support course or research-related classes and projects.
- Ensure that arts practice studios are well organized, highly functional and safe learning environments to support ongoing teaching, learning, research and open studio hours.
- Hire, train, schedule and supervise student employees to assist in managing day-to-day operations across multiple arts practice studios.
- Work closely with the Arts Practice Specialist and Arts Leadership Teams to ensure arts practice studio workflows, guidelines, policies and procedures are in line with the most up-to-date practices and requirements and in line with other art practice-based studios across the division.
- Coordinate space use scheduling requirements in tandem with divisional administrators to accommodate course and research-related activities.
- Assess safety and security issues and maintain knowledge of protocols and regulations to ensure compliance with government and university health and safety regulations (c.g. OSHAD, EPA, etc.).
- Work closely with several key collaborators such as: Arts Leadership Team, Art Program Heads, A&H Administration, Arts Center Team and Art Gallery Team.
