The Position
This is a key role in a friendly, motivated team focussed on ecological research on some of Australia’s most endangered species. The role is integral to delivering a research program focussed on conservation of Tasmanian threatened birds and involves a mix of field and office work. Based in Hobart, Tasmania, the role will be responsible for delivering key aspects of an ongoing research program, and will include fauna and flora surveys in sometimes remote areas, tree climbing, driving, data collection and curation, supporting other staff and students in the team, report writing and working within tight time frames and budgets. The role will primarily focus on two research projects targeting swift parrots and forty-spotted pardalotes. The project involves careful stakeholder management and logistics.
The Person
We are looking for a qualified ecologist/conservation biologist with experience in organising, designing, delivering and reporting upon complex research and monitoring projects. We are looking for someone who likes challenging problems and encourages team members and colleagues to workshop effective solutions. The person will need to participate in field work including high-intensity activities tree climbing and hiking, often in remote locations. It is crucial the person has demonstrable experience working safely and effectively in this type of environment. Likewise, the person will need to have highly effective time-management and organisational skills, with a demonstrated ability to balance and prioritize competing tasks, an ability to troubleshoot problems in challenging situations, and a commitment to positive and effective teamwork in dynamic situations. The person will also be able to work independently, have effective communication and social skills, and have experience managing stakeholder relationships in a positive and respectful manner.
