Closing Date: 15-Sep-2024

Maynooth University is committed to a strategy in which the primary University goals of excellent research and scholarship and outstanding education are interlinked and equally valued.

The Host-Pathogen Interaction Lab at Maynooth University led by Dr Martina Schroeder is inviting applications for a 1-year Postdoctoral Researcher position. The successful candidate will work as part of a larger team on a Science Foundation Ireland-funded project that aims to dissect how the human DEAD-box helicase 3 (DDX3X) regulates gene expression, both generally and in the context of viral infections. This is important to understand because dysregulation of DDX3X function is linked to disease, including viral infections, various cancer types, and neurological conditions, in particular the recently described neurodevelopmental condition ‘DDX3X syndrome’. Inhibitors of DDX3X are being explored for therapeutic development as broad-spectrum antivirals and anti-cancer drugs.

As part of this project, we wish to understand how DDX3X’s enzymatic activity is regulated in cells (‘regulation of the regulator’). We are therefore particularly interested in applications from candidates who have experience with recombinant protein purification via FPLC, enzymatic assays (ATPase assays), and RNA unwinding assays.

The project offers plenty of opportunities for interaction with national and international collaborators and with patient advocates, and the candidate will be supported in their further career development, e.g. via fellowship applications. We are looking for an enthusiastic candidate with a PhD and relevant research experience in Biochemistry, RNA Biology, or Molecular Cell Biology. The successful candidate must be willing to take initiative and adopt responsibility, while having excellent interpersonal skills and being a team player.
