The Department of Microbiology and Immunology at Ōtākou Whakaihu Waka, University of Otago is committed to excellence in teaching and research in fundamental and applied microbiology, immunology and virology. Our Department has a strong reputation for high quality teaching in a range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes (we have ~100 postgraduate students) including biomedical sciences, medicine, pharmacy and medical laboratory science. Our research facilities include extensive PC2 (BSL2) space with a PC3 (BSL3) unit. The Department has ready access to a mass spectrometry unit, confocal and electron microscopy units, a histology unit, flow cytometry unit, animal facility and a genomics and bioinformatics facility (https://www.otago.ac.nz/healthsciences/research/facilities/ric).

Te mahi/The role

The Department of Microbiology & Immunology is seeking to appoint a Lecturer, Senior Lecturer or Associate Professor to teach and research in the field of biomedical or environmental molecular microbiology.

In this role you will:

Develop and maintain a strong independent research programme, including acquisition of research funding Contribute to teaching (lectures and practical classes), assessment and curriculum development in the undergraduate programme, and to postgraduate student teaching and project supervision Participate in service within the Department, the School of Biomedical Sciences, the University and the wider community as appropriate Engage with and support the University of Otago's Māori Strategic Framework Engage with and support the University of Otago's Pacific Strategic Framework Kā pūkeka me kā wheako/Skills and Experience

The following is expected of the successful candidate:

Hold a PhD Be skilled and enthusiastic in passing on knowledge to a range of audiences, with clear aptitude for teaching through lectures and practical classes to our health sciences, science, medicine and health professional (medicine, physiotherapy, dentistry, medical laboratory science and pharmacy) students, at undergraduate and postgraduate levels Have proven research ability that aligns with the Department's current research programmes and strategy Have the ability to establish an on-going and active independent research programme including acquisition of research funding Have effective communication and relationship management skills, with the ability to create a collegial, supportive, inclusive and motivating environment for staff and students If applying at the level of Associate Professor, have evidence of leadership in research, teaching and service roles Have a proven ability to work well with students and staff from differing academic and cultural backgrounds Have commitment to upholding values, tikanga, kawa and traditions as guided by Ngāi Tahu, as mana whenua in the region and broad knowledge of the cultural traditions of other iwi/hapū

This is a full-time position (1 FTE, with a workload balance of 40:40:20 between teaching, research and service, respectively) at the level of Lecturer, Senior Lecturer or Associate Professor based in Dunedin. The appointment range for this appointment is as follows:

Lecturer: $90,902 to $107,300 Senior Lecturer: $112,482 to $128,305 Associate Professor: $143,671 to $157,331
