The Innovative Doctoral Education Ecosystem for Photonics (I-DEEP) is looking for Doctoral Researchers
The doctoral pilot programme Innovative Doctoral Education Ecosystem for Photonics I-DEEP is coordinated by Tampere University and gathers together all Finnish universities with research activities in light-based technologies. The I-DEEP consortium is part of the Flagship for Photonics Research and Innovation PREIN which is a leading international photonics research hub dedicated to light-based technologies. www.prein.fi
Job description
We are looking for 2 Doctoral Researchers in I-DEEP, in the area of photonics at Tampere University.
Successful candidates will pursue a doctoral degree at Tampere University which is expected to be completed in three years.
Requirements
To qualify for these positions, the candidates need to have a Master’s degree (or equivalent eligibility for doctoral studies) from an applicable field (preferably in physics and for some positions, also electrical engineering, chemistry, materials science or others may be considered) completed on 31 October 2024, at the latest (see doctoral study right requirement below). In addition, you should have demonstrated (during your studies towards the Master’s degree or otherwise) the competence and motivation to pursue postgraduate studies. Please be prepared to provide proof of your merits when requested.
If you already have a study right for a doctoral degree at Tampere University, it needs to be awarded earliest on 1 November 2023 or thereafter in order for you to be eligible for these positions.
The position requires working full-time in Tampere, Finland for the time of the employment. The chosen candidate needs to have the required permits for working in Finland before starting the employment (depending on the nationality of the candidate, e.g. residence permit in Finland).
The position requires fluent written and spoken skills in English.
The research topics are:
Development of 2D semiconductor based Photonic-neuromorphic circuits
Description: The fast development of brain-inspired neuromorphic computing systems has stimulated requirements for urgent developments of artificial synapses and neurons with ultralow-power consumption with capabilities for biologically plausible computing. In this doctoral study, photonic synaptic and neuron devices will be fabricated and characterized. In the artificial synaptic device, the incident light pulses would play the roles of action potentials, and the light-generated carriers would modify the pre-and post-synaptic membrane potential, similar to the neurotransmitter in biological synapses. Key synaptic functions, like photonic memory, multiple-timescale synaptic plasticity, paired pulse facilitation and depression, dynamic “learning–forgetting” and similar functions will be investigated while for the photonic neurons, the task would be to identify and build systems that can integrate temporally-encoded pixel data at high speed and fire fast optical spikes upon detecting desired image features. Finally, the photonic system will be combined with a software-implemented neural network that will provide a full platform for complex image classification tasks. Candidates for this position are expected to have a strong background in solid state physics, experience of device design and cleanroom fabrication, programming skills, and a keen interest in the mathematical modeling of devices. Experience in any of the following is an asset for this position: AI and Machine Learning, Neuromorphic Computing, Neural Network Simulation.
Photon imaging in extreme conditions
Description: We consider the analysis and modeling of imaging degradations such as noise and bias encountered at the boundary of the operating envelope of scanning microscopes (e.g., confocal microscopy, X-ray microtomography, etc.) and other scientific and medical imagers (e.g., limited-angle digital breast tomosynthesis systems). Emphasis is placed on extreme cases of 1) ultra-low signal-to-noise ratio; 2) ultra-low dynamic range; 3) long-range noise correlation. The research aims to provide models that can assist in the characterization, analysis, and enhancement of images to ultimately extend the applicability of the devices and improve their performance. Candidates for this position are expected to have a solid mathematical background, excellent programming skills, and a keen interest in the mathematical modeling of physical systems. Experience in any of the following is an asset for this position: probability and statistics, numerical analysis, approximation theory, linear algebra and harmonic analysis, capture and processing of raw image data.
The selection criteria
Candidates are selected based on the level of promise that they show, and this will be evaluated on the basis of their application, their previous success in studies, relevant work experience and merits in academic writing and/or scientific publishing.
We offer
The position will be filled for a fixed-term period of three years. The starting date is 1 January 2025. A trial period of six (6) months applies to all our new employees.
The salary will be based on both the job requirements and the employee’s personal performance in accordance with the salary system of Finnish universities. A typical starting salary for Doctoral Researchers is approximately 2,700 EUR/month. The salary increases based on experience and the progress of doctoral studies.
We are inviting you to be a part of a vibrant, active and truly international research community. We value interdisciplinarity, as it allows you to expand your research network and exposes you to new perspectives and ideas to solve complex research problems and pursue novel research findings. We are strongly committed to the highest level of scientific research and the provision of high-quality doctoral education.
