Among the many reasons to research and teach at the University of Vienna there is one in particular, which has convinced around 7,500 academic staff members so far. They see themselves as personalities who need space for continuous striving for top international research and scientific excellence. At the same time, they enjoy support and liberties that are not a given at other institutions. Does that sound like something for you? Welcome to our team!

Your personal sphere of influence:

Your future position is at the Department of Geography and Regional Research (IfGR) that is part of the Faculty of Earth Sciences, Geography and Astronomy. More than 100 academic staff and more than 3000 students at the IfGR appreciate the diversity of subjects within both human and physical geography. The interdisciplinary basis in both social and natural sciences provides a dynamic and inspiring environment to address critical societal challenges of our generation. The IfGR conducts outstanding research and stands out with its internationality.

Within the IfGR, your future position is assigned to the Urban Studies Working Group and supervised by Prof Kerstin Krellenberg. Through a spatial lens, which incorporates established and novel methodologies, the Working Group researches the complex interactions between the social, ecological and technical subsystems in cities to better understand the patterns driving or constraining urban sustainability transformations. This pursuit manifests in the Group’s multifaceted approach which includes conceptual, theoretical, and empirical work on urban sustainability transformations and city-specific challenges with the overall objective of contributing to urban sustainability transformations. Our work engages largely with urban areas in Europe and Latin America and includes more recent collaborations with Asian cities.

We offer a PhD position in an inspiring inter- and transdisciplinary research environment embedded in the working group’s Urban Sustainability Living Lab (https://urbanlab.univie.ac.at/) with the opportunity to become a part of the Vienna International School of Earth and Space Sciences at the Faculty of Earth Sciences, Geography and Astronomy.

Accordingly, we encourage you to submit an intriguing and innovative research proposal that illustrates your area of interest, understanding of the relevant conceptual foundation, potential for societal impact, and connection to urban sustainability transformations. Proposed research topics may include a range of foci, such as urban vulnerability and climate adaptation, housing and food and nutrition security, and they need to explicitly contribute to urban sustainability transformations.

Your future tasks:

  • Active participation in research, teaching & administration, which means:
  • You develop and complete a paper-based dissertation on an innovative topic related to urban sustainability transformations
  • You sign a doctoral thesis agreement within 12-18 months
  • You participate in teaching activities of the Urban Studies Working Group and conduct independent teaching of courses as defined by the University of Vienna’s collective agreement (2SWS on average per semester), including supervision of students
  • You participate in scientific studies, research projects, publications and other academic activities of the Urban Studies Working Group
  • You participate in the preparation of research proposals and the acquisition of third-party funding
  • You contribute to curricula activities, taking on coordination tasks (e.g. workshop organization, excursions)
  • You undertake administrative responsibilities and science communication
  • You participate in science management, including third mission activities, e.g. the organization of workshops, conferences, symposiums etc. with (non-)academic stakeholders.

This is part of your personality:

  • Master-level degree in Geography, Urban Studies, Environmental Sciences, Sustainable Development, or related fields
  • Interdisciplinary background in urban studies with the ability to address interrelated urban challenges and processes, and to link theory with empiricism and practice
  • Profound knowledge in the implementation of qualitative and/or quantitative research methods
  • Strong interest in conducting transdisciplinary research
  • Experience in conducting empirical research (e.g. in the course of the Master thesis)
  • Excellent command of written and spoken English, and willingness to learn German. Additional languages are an asset.
