About the Role
In the role of Professor of Digital Media, you will be at the forefront of advancing research, learning, and professional activities within the Department of Media and Communication and the broader academic community. This position calls for a dynamic leader who is passionate about fostering a culture of innovation and excellence among faculty and staff. You will play a pivotal role in curriculum development that is relevant to the rapidly evolving fields of media and communication, while also maintaining an internationally recognised record of significant publications, external engagement, and competitive research funding.
As the Professor of Digital Media, you will lead impactful research projects and attract substantial external funding in areas such as Digital Media, Media Production, Digital Communication, Digital Journalism, and Immersive Media. Your leadership will extend to providing collegial support to senior staff and mentoring mid-career and early-career researchers. An integral part of your responsibilities will also include attracting and supervising higher degree candidates who are keen to explore these vital fields.
You will be a discipline leader who champions public and institutional engagement, collaborating with fellow researchers to enhance and amplify the University’s existing research strengths in alignment with its strategic objectives. Additionally, your role may involve teaching responsibilities, where you will prepare and deliver classes, assess students, and contribute to both on-campus and online learning experiences.
The Department of Media and Communication, situated within the School of Social Sciences, Media, Film and Education, is renowned for its cutting-edge undergraduate and postgraduate courses as well as rigorous research training at Master and Doctoral levels. With a proud history of teaching excellence and a commitment to innovative research, Swinburne has recently achieved an ERA 4 rating, signifying ‘above world standard’ research performance. We are eager for a Professor of Digital Media who shares our commitment to enriching and expanding our teaching and research activities in this vibrant field.
About You
To be suitable for this role you will need to have experience in the below key accountabilities:
- Demonstrated ability to lead, develop, and manage multidisciplinary research projects, teams and practice-based research.
- An outstanding national and international reputation as a leader with an internationally recognised track record of research in the discipline area as evidenced by an extensive range of publications in top-tier journals and by measurable high impact outcomes including via Non-Traditional Research Outputs.
- Demonstration of a significant track record in attracting and managing external research income through competitive grants/income and/or industry collaboration.
- A track record of successful supervision of higher research degree candidates, particularly supervision to completion.
- Demonstrated ability to undertake teaching, associated administrative duties, management, and curriculum development at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

- An earned PhD in a relevant discipline to Media and Communication (Essential)
- A teaching qualification (Preferred)
