Lecturer in Factory Planning, Organization and Sustainable Manufacturing

The Vietnamese-German University (VGU) is seeking a highly qualified full-time lecturer in Factory Planning, Organization and Sustainable Manufacturing. Candidates must hold a PhD in this field or a closely related field and have a strong background in research. Relevant international experience is of advantage. The successful candidate will become part of an international network of universities and research institutes.

Teaching Responsibilities

In the role of a lecturer, the successful candidate will teach undergraduate courses in the Mechanical Engineering (MEN) and graduate courses in the program Global Production Engineering & Management program (GPE) The expected workload for the in-class lecture conduction is 08 academic hours per week, totaling 240 academic hours per year (1 academic hour equals to 45 minutes).

Teaching should reflect current research methods and results, and comprises lectures on the following modules:

  • Industrial Management: The module focuses on the principles of managing industrial operations. On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:
    • characterize various forms of business organization and distinguish them for requirements of people, technology, and organization. The Students will learn how to describe work preparation including work scheduling and control. Furthermore, comprehension of the tasks of production system design and production logistics is created. The importance of IT-based production planning and control is imparted, as well. Apart from this the principles and methods of the Toyota production system are taught.
    • characterize various aspects of institutional management and differentiate them regarding topics of management, management levels, and management functions. Types of structural management are described, exemplary applied to structures of enterprises, project structures, and organization development. Additionally, the students will learn the basics of personalized management using the example of management tools, management techniques, and management styles, referring this to their position in the management structure
  • International and Intercultural Project Management: Explorative, situational, and problem-oriented teaching methods will be used to provide knowledge, skills, and understanding of project management in general and the international and intercultural aspects of managing projects. Student-centered learning is encouraged where students work on their own, in teams, and under the supervision of the lecturer. Students will work on relevant project-related case studies for project management in local and international working environments. Topics include project lifecycle, planning, execution, monitoring, and closing. Students will learn about project scheduling, resource allocation, risk management, and the use of project management software tools.
  • Learning factory: The module provides students with the basics of production and workshop planning, including elementary knowledge of types of factories, further evaluation of technology, system theories, and planning and controlling strategies of factories. Students should gain state-of-the-art knowledge about value creation, factory elements, and operations management. One focus is laid on lean management, production planning and control. Through case studies, the theoretically thought contents can be deepened in extracts.
  • Scientific Writing: This course will provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the research and teaching structures within the scientific engineering community. Students will develop skills and techniques essential for successful research and learning. Key areas of focus include:
    • Gathering information and proper citation techniques
    • Effective group collaboration
    • Report writing
    • Presenting academic results using PowerPoint (Information provision, motivating the auditory, visual, and verbal information)
    • Integrating various research findings to develop new models, concepts, and theories
    • Writing scientific articles, term papers, and master theses with emphasis on form, content, and structure

The named courses are subject to change upon realistic needs of the programs and joint agreement between the lecturer, relevant Academic Coordinators, and Dean/Vice Dean in charge of teaching. Courses may requires conducting relevant laboratory activities and/or advising student projects.

The holder of this job is also responsible for supervising bachelor’s and master’s theses and mentoring PhD students.

Research Responsibilities

As a faculty member of a research-oriented university, the successful candidate is expected to significantly contribute to the scientific profile of VGU through innovation. This includes and is not limited to comprehensive activities in basic research as well as applied research in the fields of Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Engineering Management, and related fields. The ability to apply and generate externally funded research projects is highly desirable.

Administrative responsibilities

The successful candidate is expected to contribute to the development of the Mechanical Engineering (MEN) by participating in administrative, marketing and other public activities of the program in consultation with the Academic Coordinator of the study program and the German partner university, namely Ruhr-Universität Bochum. She or he is also expected to contribute actively to the academic self-administration of the Faculty of Engineering and university by being willing to stand for election to the Faculty Council, Academic Senate and/or other bodies.

Qualification

Candidates must hold a PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Engineering Management or a closely related field, preferably from a well-known international university. A current title of Professor will be a plus, as experience and understanding of the German higher education system and methodology. Other requirements include:

  • An outstanding academic record with a focus on Factory Planning, Organization Management and Sustainable Manufacturing or other areas closely related to it
  • Proven expertise in Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering
  • Strong track record of successful research activities and publications in international and peer-reviewed journals in the related area
  • Proven teaching experience with strong self-motivation combined with a passion for teaching and research
  • Experience in industry is of advantage
  • Proven excellent English proficiency:
    • Candidates who are from non-native English-speaking countries should include one of the following valid English proficiency certificates; IELTS 6.5, TOEFL 548(PBT), TOEFL 84 (iBT), TOEFL 212 (CBT), CEFR level B2 or Aptis level C1 at the time of application submission. Alternatively, candidates who do not hold a valid English proficiency certificate at the submission time need to be internally assessed at VGU to meet the criterion stated above.
