The Department of Music at the University of Southampton invites applications for the role of visiting artist/teacher in conducting and ensemble music direction.

Visiting teachers earn £55.32/hr on contracts that are renewed according to student demand and Department needs. We expect (subject to student demand) to require around 180 hours of tuition, including preparation for classroom teaching, in conducting and/or music direction across the coming academic year. An additional 4-6 hours per academic year of mandatory professional development and training will be compensated at a CPD rate of £27.50/hr.

You will be a professional performer who can demonstrate experience teaching in higher education settings.

You will be able to help deliver teaching across our degree courses. You will have the ability to work with others and be able to adapt to teaching approaches suitable for an effective (international) student learning experience, in the interest of a diverse, historically curious, egalitarian, anti-racist and sustainable approach to music studies. You will have a career as a conductor and/or musical director and be able to demonstrate detailed understanding and knowledge of traditional and contemporary conducting technique(s). You will be prepared to teach conducting to large groups of university-level beginning conducting students in a classroom setting. Scholarly interest in conducting or musical leadership studies (demonstrated for example by doctoral level study) may be of advantage.

You will have an advanced degree in music or be able to demonstrate equivalent professional experience. Your work as a professional performer will inform your approach in the studio/classroom. You will be comfortable teaching students from diverse backgrounds, including those whose first language is not English.

You will join a vibrant and forward-looking academic community in the Department of Music at Southampton, a centre of exceptional research and teaching in musicology, ethnomusicology, performance, composition, music technology, music education and music business. The department celebrates the performance of all kinds of music. We encourage students to expand their horizons by exploring forms of musical expression with which they may not have been familiar. You will support this mission by offering excellent teaching in conducting and music direction, including in genres beyond the Western Art Music orchestral canon.

As a university we aim to create an environment where everyone can thrive. We are proactive in fostering a culture of inclusion, respect and equality of opportunity. We particularly welcome applications from women and/or candidates from ethnic minorities who are currently under-represented in our department.

Informal enquiries can be addressed to Professor Thomas Irvine, Head of Music, at T.A.Irvine@soton.ac.uk

Please note Title upon appointment will be Part Time Lecturer.
