We wish to appoint a Research Fellow to support research into outcomes for Adolescents and Young Adults (AYA) with cancer. This is a very exciting international project, called STRONG-AYA, focused on improving the lives of young people with cancer. AYAs with cancer form a unique group; they face age-specific issues (e.g. infertility, unemployment, financial problems) and decreased quality of life due to cancer and its treatment. Unlike dedicated healthcare and trials for paediatric cancer patients, AYA-specific healthcare services are scarce and vary across Europe. This project will focus on developing a Core Outcome Set (COS) for AYAs with cancer: a consensus-based agreed minimum set of outcomes that should be measured and reported. This will involve reviewing the literature, interviewing young people and health professionals, using methods to develop consensus around outcomes, contributing to the development of creative ways to assess outcomes in practice, and collaborating with partners across Europe.

The STRONG-AYA consortium consists of clinical and scientific leaders in AYA-care, social and data sciences and registries, European Cancer Organisation, Youth Cancer Europe and the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC).

You will have a relevant PhD or equivalent research-related qualifications and experience in a relevant area and a keen interest in the field of health psychology and the well-being of young people with cancer. Excellent organisational and communication skills are also essential for this role, and the ability to travel to selected locations. This post is full time (100% FTE), funded by UKRI, until 31/12/2024. Flexible working, part-time/ job share will be considered.

Informal enquiries are very welcome. Please contact Professor Anne-Sophie Darlington (A.Darlington@soton.ac.uk) for further information.

*Applications will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification.  The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon completion of PhD.  Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.
