ESRC Project: Powering Up Coastal Economies:  Path Creation in Low Carbon and Renewable Energies

Applications are invited for a full-time Research Fellows position on the above research project which is being led by Professor Peter Sunley, in the Department of Geography and Environmental Science, University of Southampton. The post will work closely with the other investigators: Professors Stuart Dawley and Danny MacKinnon (Geography and CURDS, Newcastle), and Professor Jane Wills (Geography, Exeter). The aim of the project is to investigate and compare the regional development paths of low carbon energy sectors in four coastal regions of the UK, and explore the regional outcomes of energy transitions.

About you

You will have completed, or be close to completing, a PhD in Economic Geography, business, economics or a closely-related field, and you will have shown your top research capabilities. You will have demonstrated initiative and problem-solving skills, and will also have excellent communication skills, alongside a collaborative approach.

Open to researchers from around the world and from diverse backgrounds, we are looking for researchers who have the potential to become influential leaders in economic geography, and energy transitions and their regional outcomes.

Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD. Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.

What we can offer you

You will join the Economy, Society, Governance research group (see http://www.southampton.ac.uk/geography/research/groups/economy_society.page). The group has a strong international reputation in human geography. The research team will also support you through mentoring and networking opportunities.

As a founding signatory of the Athena SWAN charter, and holder of a silver award, we aim to create an environment where everyone can thrive and are proactive in fostering a culture of inclusion, respect and equality of opportunity. We will provide additional benefits that will make your life easier, such as a generous holiday allowance, additional university closure days, subsidised health and fitness facilities and a range of discounts.

Informal enquiries can be made to Professor Peter Sunley (P.J.Sunley@soton.ac.uk) (00 44) (0) 23 80595496.
