The position reports directly to the Co-Director of GLOBE, Prof Gary Sacks.

What the role involves?

The Research Fellow will initiate, conduct and lead research in the area of the corporate determinants of health, primarily related to food and nutrition. The Research Fellow will work on a range of projects aimed at analysing the corporate determinants of health in Australia and globally, with a focus on exploring innovative solutions to the harms created by large corporations. The research will mostly relate to the policies and practices of the food industry, asset managers and institutional investors, and the governance structures in which they operate. The work is likely to also extend to other harmful commodity industries. Research projects are likely to include a variety of research methods, potentially including quantitative and qualitative research methods.

This role is perfect for a researcher looking for the next step in their career and an opportunity to further develop their leadership skills. The role offers opportunities to collaborate within fellow researchers at Deakin as well as within Australia and worldwide.

As a Research Fellow, you will:

  • Initiate, design and conduct productive, high-quality research, scholarship and creative activities generating high impact outputs
  • Support and lead applications for external competitive and other funding
  • Engage collaboratively to develop novel and high-quality research or creative activities
  • Widely communicate outputs to the discipline(s) and the community
  • Ensure impact of academic activity in the field and the community
  • Build national and international reputation, based on growing, focused body of work recognised for quality, excellence and impact
  • Initiate, design, conduct and lead intra- and inter-disciplinary research collaborations, to enable major breakthroughs in knowledge and understanding and solutions to complex problems
  • Supervise honours and/or HDR students with timely completions and productive, high-quality outcomes
  • Provide effective mentoring to early career researchers to support professional and career development and employability

To be successful, you’ll have:

  • PhD in a relevant discipline and/or other relevant qualifications and experience
  • Emerging reputation in research and scholarship through publications and/or other research and advocacy activities in a relevant research area
  • Demonstrated track record of securing research funding and writing successful grant applications
  • Emerging experience managing a team in a research environment
  • Ability to make a contribution to communities through research and related advocacy
