Do you want to join an expanding team of visionary thinkers driving the frontiers of sustainability at a University that is making major investments in sustainability?
About us
The Lecturer in Sustainability will report to the Pro-Vice Chancellor, Education and be a key member of the Surrey Online Learning (SOL) team, which is developing 15 global master’s degrees in areas where Surrey has core strengths. These global master’s courses will be co-designed five at a time. We are keen to provide a mix of fully online and hybrid innovative online courses that address both individual and business need.
This role will link closely with the Institute for Sustainability at the University of Surrey, which has been designed as a ‘synthesis centre’, bringing together social and natural scientists, technologists and non-academic stakeholders in the public, private and third sector to advance transdisciplinary research in sustainability. The Institute facilitates interconnections between world-leading experts and generates and promotes innovative ideas and approaches for sustainability.
About the role
The appointed Lecturer in Sustainability will play a key role in the provision of the online MSc Sustainable Development in Practice through Surrey Online Learning (SOL) and the support of online delivery of sustainability training programmes by the Institute for Sustainability (IfS).
The Lecturer will support the online MSc Sustainable Development in Practice; this will include all aspects of synchronous and asynchronous delivery, ensure the management of assessment processes and collaborate with the wider online programmes on Surrey Online Learning (SOL) as appropriate. Additionally, The Lecturer will support the training programmes on sustainability which form part of the soon-to-be-constituted CIFAL Centre in collaboration with the UN Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR).
About you
This post is available full time as a teaching Lecturer who will develop and teach the Sustainable Development in Practice Online PGT Programme from September 2024. This Programme has 3 intakes, September, February and June and provides students with a mainly asynchronous experience but with regular synchronous sessions and a need to maintain an active and engaged online community through discussion forums and online activities.
Applicants for this post need to be:
A dedicated and dynamic education professional with extensive experience in moderating online discussions, fostering engaging learning environments, and providing comprehensive student support.
You must be able to excel in creating a welcoming atmosphere for students, ensuring their smooth transition into the University of Surrey and cultivating a sense of community both online and face-to-face.
A primary focus is to enhance student engagement through active participation in programme discussion boards. You must be adept at monitoring, acknowledging, and regularly commenting on discussions, asking thought-provoking questions, summarizing key points, encouraging healthy debate, and promoting overall engagement.
You will be experienced at promoting, organizing, facilitating, and delivering teaching sessions tailored to the specific needs of SOL and CIFAL programmes.
You must excel at mark management activities, including the first marking of assessments, moderation, and quality assurance processes, providing valuable formative and summative feedback to students.
