The Institute for German Studies at the University of Vienna is the largest research and teaching centre in Austria, covering the fields of German language and literatures. The core areas are Modern German Literature, Medieval German Language and Literature, Germanic Linguistics, German as a Foreign and Second Language, and German Teaching Methodology.

The position advertised lies within the field of German as a Second Language. Within this work-group you can expect a dedicated team within a friendly work environment and the possibility of bringing forth and working on your own ideas.

In case of a positive evaluation at the end of the fixed-term period of 4 years, the contract will be changed to a permanent position.

Do you enjoy working with young people, are you curious, and do you want to pass on your knowledge?  As a Senior Lecturer, you play a key role in educating students. In addition to providing a solid academic education, we also place a special emphasis on the personal development of students. We support students in developing curiosity and critical thinking, thereby creating a solid foundation for the professional challenges of the next generation.

Your workplace:

In past years, the German as a Second Language working group has developed specialised approaches to German language support and language education within the context of migration. Furthermore, we take the multilingualism of the learners into great consideration.

As a Senior Lecturer, you will mainly be involved in teaching German as a second language with reference to the educational institution of school. We expect the successful candidate to remain up to date with the current state of research, to undergo continuing education and training in didactics and to conduct research, especially during lecture-free periods. In addition, the University of Vienna expects the successful candidate to fulfil administrative tasks, in particular the administration of teaching. 

In case of a positive evauluation at the end of the fixed-term period of 4 years, the contract will be changed to a permanent position. 

The work schedule of 20 hours/week includes a mandatory teaching assignment of 7 hours/week on average. 

Your future tasks:

You actively participate in teaching, research & administration, which means:

  • You will hold courses of the bachelor´s and master´s programme independently.
  • The work schedule of 20 hours/week includes a mandatory teaching assignment of 7 hours/week on average. 
  • You will actively contribute to the (further) development of teaching and examination standards. 
  • We expect from you remain up to date with the current state of scientific research, to undergo continuing education and training in didactics and to conduct research, especially during the lecture-free periods. 
  • You will take on administrative tasks, especially in  the administration of teaching. 
  • As part of the team of German as a Second Language, we expect you to participate in internal meetings and activities such as research colloquia. 

What we expect:

  • Completed doctorate in the field of German as a Second Language or an appropriate linguistic or language didactic specialization. 
  • Excellent knowledge of the current state of research in the field of language support and German language education 
  • Several years of independent teaching at a post-secondary educational institution
  • Great enthusiasm for conveying knowledge and teaching at university level 
  • Excellent command of written and spoken German (C1 Level)
  • IT user skills
  • You should be a team player with high social skills

Desirable qualifications:

  • Knowledge of one or more migration languages 
  • Knowledge of the perspectives of migration-related education
