About the Role
The Bioinformatics Research Associate will contribute to bioinformatics support for the childhood AML-related, Cancer Australia-funded projects carried out by the Acute Leukaemia Laboratory in the Centre for Cancer Biology (CCB), and other projects in the laboratory as appropriate. The role of this bioinformatics research associate will be to support the group’s collaborative research with the Children’s Cancer Institute into the genomic causes and germline predisposition of childhood acute myeloid leukaemia (AML).
Working closely with other members of the collaborative team, the bioinformatics research associate will help develop software tools to determine established, emerging, and novel genomic changes associated with risk of childhood AML. The bioinformatics research associate will also support the group’s clinical analysis pipelines for identifying families with inherited cancer predisposition syndromes and liaise with the ZERO childhood cancer team to facilitate rapid and reliable delivery of germline genomic results for childhood AML patients.

The Centre for Cancer Biology (CCB) is an alliance between the University of South Australia and CALHN and is co-located with other cancer-focussed researchers within a purpose-built building in Adelaide’s Biotech and Medical Precinct. The CCB studies the fundamental causes of cancer in order to find new ways to prevent and treat the disease and is a recognised hub for innovative science leading to breakthrough therapies.
Core Responsibilities
- Contribute to planning of research by participation in planning sessions with the collaborative team. reviewing relevant literature, bioinformatic tools and other sources of information and offering new ideas on bioinformatics approaches
- Contribute to the execution of research by developing novel analytical approaches for genomic analysis, engineering software tools to assess established and novel cancer risk measures in childhood AML and other cancer cohorts and contributing to clinical cancer genomics for childhood AML
- Contribute to the dissemination of new knowledge by drafting reports, abstracts, scientific papers and other instruments providing accounts of research undertakings and the findings observed and presenting at meetings, seminars and conferences
- Contribute to a safe and ethical working environment by complying with human ethics, animal ethics, privacy and other appropriate guidelines and maintaining confidentiality of research proposals and research findings
Essential Skills and Experience
- BSc (Hons), BEng (Hons) or MSc in bioinformatics, biology, applied mathematics, computer science, or a related field
- Experience working with massively parallel sequencing data
- Strong expertise in at least one of bioinformatics, software engineering, or statistics, with fluency in one or several of the following areas: Python, bash, R, C/C++, Perl, SQL, or Java and familiarity with command line use of POSIX systems (eg Linux)
- Expertise in at least one of genetics and/or genomics with prior experience in the analysis of RNA/DNA sequencing data
- Ability to work both independently and collaborate effectively with others in a multi-disciplinary research environment
