About the Role

The Research Assistant will expand the research capacity of the Melbourne Academy of Surgical Anatomy (MASA). This position will contribute to medical imaging analysis, segmentation, biomechanics and research. The Research Assistant will work closely with senior team members to assist in the achievement  of research objectives. This will require preparation  and imaging of body donor tissues, to establish overall digital models with realistic haptics.. This position will also be required to conduct computer based image segmentation work and some knowledge in programming to streamline the work is a plus, the position would alsoassist with literature research as required.

Your responsibilities will include: 

  • Preparation of samples for scanning  and generation of models from the resultant scans  
  • Scanning of relevant materials research as part of the Melbourne Academy of Surgical Anatomy, integrating knowledge of human anatomy into research activities 
  • Assisting in the development and implementation of software tools and algorithms for medical imaging and biomedical data analysis, leveraging programming skills in Python, MATLAB or C++
  • Actively participating in team meetings and contributing to the synthesis of new research ideas and methods. 
  • Undertaking administrative functions and obligations as relevant to the research program 

Who We Are Looking For

Our ideal candidate is one who is open to innovation and cross-discipline knowledge sharing. You will act as a central hub, liaising with relevant professional and industry bodies and stakeholders to foster collaborative partnerships. You must be able to work to set deadlines and ensure high-quality outputs. As a self-starter, you should use your strong initiative to benefit their work, while also being a team player who supports other team members and ensures regular communication with all parties. Awareness and adherence to various compliance requirements are essential. Additionally, you should be capable of preparing research reports and manuscripts for stakeholders. 

You will also have: 

  • Completion (or near completion) of a PhD or a completed bachelor’s degree in Medical Imaging, Radiography, Anatomy, Computer Science, Engineering, Biomechanics or a related discipline
  • Experience in medical imaging analysis, a strong emphasis on understanding human anatomy
  • A demonstrated aptitude for research, preferably with a sound publication record in relevant areas, commensurate with experience and opportunities

This role requires that the successful candidate must undergo and maintain an up-to-date Working with Children Check. This is essential to guarantee a secure environment for all individuals at the University.
