About us
The London Institute for Healthcare Engineering (LIHE), led by the School of Biomedical Engineering & Imaging Sciences (BMEIS) at King’s College London (KCL), is part of the vision for St Thomas’ MedTech Hub. The Institute is housed in a new building embedded within St Thomas’ campus, which will bring together King’s research excellence, Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust’s leading clinical practice and the med tech sector’s commercial innovation power and talent, engaging multinationals, SMEs and start-ups simultaneously. Its vision is to accelerate the clinical impact of med tech innovation by building robust med tech ventures. It aims to become the hub of all MedTech activity in London and the UK by building a strong ecosystem of all key stakeholders in the industry.
About the role
We are seeking to appoint an experienced and highly motivated Venture Manager.
The Ventures Manager will be responsible for the implementation and delivery of acceleration support for the King’s MedTech Accelerator situated at LIHE, for startups, spinouts and SME’s from across the KCL eco-system and the UK (founder-owned and college-owned IP) in MedTech and digital health.
The role holder will be responsible for supporting the best early-stage, diverse entrepreneurial talent amongst health innovators at King’s, and potentially from outside King’s. The LIHE Venture Manager will be responsible for the successful delivery and day-to-day management of an inclusive programme of MedTech startup acceleration with clearly defined evaluation processes to objectively review, and to evolve the programme based on participant feedback.
They will be responsible for sourcing the best, early-stage health projects and ventures, and will be required to develop compelling outreach initiatives to promote the programme to build a robust pipeline of entrepreneurial talent.
The Venture Manager will play a fundamental role in the holistic strategy at LIHE to support the viability and drive the growth of early-stage MedTech and digital health ventures.
This is an exciting and dynamic role that will provide the recipient opportunities to deliver innovative med tech projects and build relationships across the MedTech translation ecosystem at King’s and with external partners. Reporting to the Head of Ventures, MedTech, the Ventures Manager will interact with key stakeholders across academia, healthcare, industry, and the investment community to support med tech innovators, facilitate real-world implementation and translation of ideas, and drive the growth of impactful new businesses.
This is a full-time post (35 Hours per week), and you will be offered a fixed term contract for 3 years in the first instance. This is a hybrid role with at least 3 days on campus.
About you
To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:
Essential criteria
- Educated to degree level in a relevant field
- Experience of designing and running programmes relating to entrepreneurship and venture growth, including monitoring and evaluation, with a proven track record of positive outputs for ventures
- Experience of health innovation and how it can be enhanced
- Strong relationship building skills, and ability to compel others with persuasive cases and work effectively in a team
- Experience and skill in facilitation (i.e. running workshops), in an education or professional setting
- Proven ability in assisting start-ups and spin-outs to start and flourish
- Proven experience in building a mentor ecosystem
- Flexible, confident and energetic. A self-starter who is comfortable working independently (with support) and has a proactive attitude to problem solving
Desirable criteria
- Budget management experience
- Experience in the medical device (MedTech) sector, or demonstrable experience of working with deep technology startups
- Engaging and influencing stakeholders at all levels and backgrounds, being able to bring people on board with new ideas
