Situated within the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, the Nutrition, Food & Exercise Sciences Department at Surrey is one of the UK's foremost academic nutritional sciences centres, with a multidisciplinary group of 14 academic staff. The Department was awarded the 2017/2018 Queens Anniversary Prize for its teaching and research in the area of Food & Nutrition for Health.  Dietetics at Surrey is world-renowned and continues to be ranked highly in national tables, with 94% student satisfaction in the 2024 National Student Survey.  The University has just announced the launch of our new Food & Nutrition Lab, which is fully equipped teaching and research facility, with state-of-the-art cooking and food preparation for our food, nutrition and dietetics work.

The role

We are actively seeking HCPC Registered Dietitians for a full-time Lecturer post, who will have a significant input into the teaching and research of nutrition and dietetics at undergraduate level. You will be an integral part of the dietetic teaching team, contributing to teaching at all undergraduate levels using a variety of methods, including formal lectures, group tutorials, workshops for skill development and simulation-based learning. You will also actively participate in innovative curriculum development, course validation and accreditation of our existing programmes.

In addition, you will be involved in supporting our final year research projects and contribute to the ongoing research within the department or School where appropriate. The post will also be involved in Dietetic placement visits and preparation sessions, whilst supporting the Lead Placement Facilitator in providing quality assurance of the placements. Pastoral support is an important part of our work at the University, and you will act as a personal tutor for undergraduate (and possibly postgraduate) students.

A job share (part-time) would be considered. Some home working will be considered.

About you

The successful applicant will be expected to have several years of dietetic experience, but there is flexibility with regards to experience and hours for the right combination of skills. An enthusiasm for teaching is essential, and experience in teaching would be an advantage, with a view to developing teaching methods, materials and technologies to enhance the student learning experience.

A teaching qualification is required, but this can be obtained in house once you are in post. You will be assigned a senior colleague to mentor you throughout the probation period.

What we can offer

In addition to the salary we offer a generous pension, relocation assistance where appropriate, flexible working options including job share and blended home/campus working locations (dependent on work duties), access to world-class leisure facilities on campus, a range of travel schemes and supportive family friendly benefits including an excellent on-site nursery.

How to apply

To apply please upload a CV and a supporting statement outlining your suitability for the post.

For an informal discussion please contact Caitlin Jeary, Programme Director, Dietetics (email: c.jeary@surrey.ac.uk).

Interviews will be held Tuesday 20th August 2024. Shortlisted candidates will be asked to give a ten-minute presentation with the title of ‘How I can contribute to the teaching of Nutrition and Dietetics and to the Student Experience at the University of Surrey’ to an audience of academic colleagues from the School of Biosciences and a 30 minute formal interview.

The University of Surrey is committed to providing an inclusive environment that offers equal opportunities for all.  We place great value on diversity and are seeking to increase the diversity within our community.  Therefore we particularly encourage applications from under-represented groups, such as people from Black, Asian and minority ethnic groups and people with disabilities.
