Celebrating its bicentenary in 2024, The University of Manchester (UoM) was the first and most eminent of England’s civic universities. Today we are part of the prestigious Russell Group of UK universities and one of the UK’s largest single-site higher education institutions, with more than 46,000 students, 13,000 staff, a £1.2 billion turnover, and a significant ongoing capital investment programme. Manchester has a long and distinguished track record in the research and teaching of core Computer Science, and across interfaces to adjacent disciplines. Founded upon the pioneering work of Williams, Kilburn and Turing, the Department was the first academic Department of Computer Science in the UK and one of the first to run an undergraduate programme.
To continue building on this proud history, The University of Manchester is establishing The Furber Chair in Computer Systems Engineering. The Chair recognises the work of Professor Steve Furber CBE, who was the co-designer of the original ARM processor, the world’s leading embedded processor core and has made fundamental contributions to electronic systems with infinite applications. The Furber Chair also functions as a cornerstone of UoM’s strategic plan for expansion in Computer Science & Engineering, defining what can be achieved in the 2030s and beyond. The department is expanding in line with city, region, national, and international funding and research priorities centred on a number of key research specialities including that of advanced semiconductor technology and novel computing paradigms.
As Furber Chair, the individual will have the opportunity to shape and drive the research at the Department of Computer Science, specifically within the Advanced Processor Technologies (APT) research group which brings together activities across the Computing Systems landscape from the investigation of novel device and processing paradigms through to hardware and software architectures and run-time platforms. The Chair will also play a leading role in cultivating national and international networks as well as industry partners.
The Department of Computer Science is a leading research department, and values exceptional researchers and teachers. The successful candidate will publish to the highest standards, secure competitive external research funding, deliver real-world impact, and contribute to PhD training programmes. We value applications from those with experience in industry. The chosen individual will share UoM’s commitment to fostering an inclusive and nurturing culture in which all colleagues and students have the opportunity to thrive and progress their careers.
