The Faculty of Engineering and Physical Science at the University of Southampton is a world-class centre for education, research and enterprise.
We represent the largest and most diverse engineering and physical science grouping in the UK. Our expertise looks deep below the Earth's crust, reaches into space and encompasses everything in between.
We train the audiologists, engineers and scientists of the future through our educational programmes, provide industry with innovative solutions to their problems, and have an impact on society through our world-leading research.
Our technicians underpin all that we do in our University. The apprenticeships we are offering will provide an exciting opportunity to learn and apply your enthusiasm for engineering and its’ appliance to science, in a vibrant, diverse environment. On successful completion of the apprenticeship you will become a qualified Experimental Fluids Technician (Automation and Controls Engineering), providing specialist technical support for the comprehensive wind tunnel and experimental fluid research laboratories in B185 on the Boldrewood Campus, within the School of Engineering.
The apprenticeship will be a combination of learning on the job, guided by highly experienced, knowledgeable and skilled technicians together with off the job training/study with our provider Fareham College. Along with traditional equipment service and maintenance techniques you will have an opportunity to learn highly desirable skills including aeronautical and wind tunnel facility operation (including the unique anechoic wind tunnel) as part of the National Wind Tunnel Facility, calibration and equipment use, electronic circuit testing and repair, all within an exciting and innovative environment.
We are signatories of the Technician Commitment and have pledged to support technicians in key areas: www.southampton.ac.uk/about/our-people/technical-staff.page
We are proud of our achievements and the high quality of our research and teaching. Our ambitions are reflected in these web pages, which give an overview of Engineering and Physical Science at Southampton, our staff, and the opportunities to study and work with us:
On successful completion of the apprenticeship, pay will be the lowest spine point of Level 3, which is Spine Point 22, £29,605 full-time equivalent.
In year one of the apprenticeship, pay will be 60 per cent of this lowest spine point value £17,763, before increasing to 70 per cent in year two and to 80 per cent in year three.
* NB - Notwithstanding the provisions set out above, all apprentices will receive a salary which equates to at least the applicable National Minimum Wage or National Living Wage rate for their age, where this exceeds those contractual provisions.
