  • Build your academic networks and your career
  • Access cutting-edge facilities and technology
  • Competitive salary and benefits

We seek to appoint an exceptional early career researcher with a background in photonics to conduct research in precision frequency lasers.

The successful candidate will conduct experimental research into novel lasers to address challenges in quantum and space sensing systems. This centrally funded university position provides an opportunity to accelerate a research career in photonics with potential cross-over into other disciplines such as quantum hardware, metrology and sensing, and space adaptive optics.

The role is located in the Diamond Laser Group, which is part of the Centre for Quantum Engineering. The successful candidate will benefit from an outstanding academic environment that includes a large team of experts in photonics and quantum science, well-resourced photonics laboratories and an excellent international reputation in the field.

The position is aimed to:

  • Kickstart an academic career for an outstanding early-career scientist in experimental photonics and applications;
  • Demonstrate novel pathways to high power and high coherence lasers;
  • Develop numerical model(s) that can be used to predict performance and optimize design;
  • Drive the development of devices towards the needs of applications in quantum sensing and space adaptive optics.

About Us

The Faculty of Science and Engineering at Macquarie University is a dynamic faculty determined to leave positive change for our students, staff and partners. We work with our partners to discover, create and innovate to build a better future with sustainability at its core. We are also committed to creating the next generation of STEM leaders who will shape our rapidly evolving world. The pairing of engineering and science in a single faculty means many of our research discoveries see direct technological applications. We are active within many industry partnerships, commercial collaborations and joint enterprise initiatives with government, industry and business partners.

The Diamond Laser Group within the Faculty of Science and Engineering is a vibrant and innovative group internationally recognised for its research in extreme optical materials such as diamond. It is based in the School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences amongst quantum scientists, physicists, astronomers, and mathematicians, who develop theoretical and practical tools for solving problems in diverse fields of application. We collaborate locally, nationally, and internationally with academic and industrial partners across fundamental and applied photonics research.
