With 27 teaching subjects, one specialization and over 12,000 student teachers, the University of Vienna is the largest teacher training institution in Austria. At the Centre for Teacher Education (ZLB), we are working to bundle and further develop the various initiatives to improve the quality of teacher education. Together with the faculties and centres involved in teacher education and the universities of teacher education within the North-East Network, future teachers are prepared for the changing needs of a modern school and are enabled to contribute to shaping the learning and living environment of schools on the basis of scientific expertise.We are searching for a committed university assistant (prae doc) for the section Education at the Department for Teacher Education.

The announcement is made for four years, whereby the employment relationship is initially limited to 1.5 years and is automatically extended to a total of four years, unless the employer submits a declaration of non-renewal after a maximum of 12 months. Admission to the doctoral (DSE) school is required.

Your future tasks:

The prae doc position is situated within the project Studies & School (Prof. Nele Kampa, professor for school pedagogy with a focus on secondary level education) a project that examines whether there are any negative or positive effects of working in a school alongside learning. The key interest is: a) what conditions do student teachers have at schools; b) how are those conditions affecting their studies. It comprises a comprehensive quantitative study in several federal states of Austria.

Collaboration in research, teaching and administration is expected:

  • Participation in research projects / research studies
  • Implementation of a quantitative study in schools under supervision (conceptualization, conduct, survey, analysis)
  • Participation in publications / academic articles / presentations
  • We expect the successful candidate to sign a doctoral thesis agreement within 12-18 months.
  • Participation in teaching and independent teaching of courses as defined by the collective agreement
  • Supervision of students
  • Involvement in the organisation of meetings, conferences, symposiums
  • Involvement in the department administration as well as in teaching and research administration

This is part of your personality:

  • A very good master's degree in teacher training (subjects: mathematics, a science subject, German or English), or a very good master's degree in education, pedagogy, educational science, psychology or a related field of study.
  • Interest in topics of school and classroom research, especially on heterogeneity topics
  • First experiences in the application of quantitative methods (e.g., SPSS, R or other statistical programs) as well as interest in own further development
  • General didactic abilities in teaching knowledge, skills and abilities
  • High level of written and oral expression
  • Excellent command of written and spoken German (B2) and English (C1)
  • IT user skills
  • Ability to work in a team

Desirable qualifications are

  • Teaching experience / experience of working with e-learning
  • Knowledge of university processes and structures
  • Experience abroad
  • Basic experience in research methods and academic writing
