School of Ocean & Earth Science - Technical

The School of Ocean and Earth Science seeks to provide a better understanding of our dynamic planetary system and address key societal challenges in the ocean and Earth sciences. We are looking to appoint a Mechanical Workshop Technician and Crew Person to support those aims by providing mechanical engineering support to a wide range of equipment and crewing aboard our vessels.

You will be expected to provide mechanical engineering support to the design, manufacture and repair of a wide variety of the equipment used across all areas of the school. As crew aboard SOES vessels, you will ensure safe operation on board, liaise with customers and contribute to marine safety training.

You will be resourceful in the delivery of support, skilled at communicating with customers, and will have developed sound problem-solving skills. An understanding of generic oceanographic equipment would also be desirable.

The ability to weld using a range of techniques is desirable. The successful candidate must be able to attain an ENG1 or ML5 medical certificate and complete basic marine safety training.

This is a full time permanent position within Ocean and Earth Science, at Southampton University’s Waterfront Campus based at the National Oceanography Centre Southampton site. The post is Level 3 in the Technical and Experimental Job Family, and the salary will be in the range of £29,605-£33,966
