Applications are invited for appointment as Post-doctoral Fellow in the Department of Chemistry (Ref.: 527392), to commence as soon as possible for one year, with the possibility of renewal subject to satisfactory performance.

Applicants should possess a Ph.D. degree in Chemistry, Materials Science or Chemical Engineering as well as a strong background and experience in nanomaterial synthesis, interface characterizations, electrocatalytic performance assessment, and flow reactor scale-up.  They should have proficiency in written and spoken English, a strong sense of responsibility, good organizational skills, and the ability to work independently.  Knowledge of (a) membrane electrode assembly, (b) gas diffusion electrode, (c) macro-/micro-fluidic system, (d) flow simulation, (e) bipolar membrane, (f) reverse osmosis, (g) software-hardware integration, (h) on-line sensor, and (i) automation/robotics is a highly appreciated.

The appointee will work on a Technology Startup Support Scheme for Universities at HKU that aims at developing pilot-scale prototypes for upcycling toxic wastes into value-added fertilizers, including but not limited to those involving nitrate, nitrite, and ammonia.  They are expected to enhance the conversion yield, faradaic efficiency, turnover frequency, and stability of the scaled-up EC Flow system version 2.0.  The performance of the next-generation automated system should allow direct field deployment at industrial collaborators’ and institutional partners’ sites and can be fully integrated into rooftop gardens, urban farms, greenhouses, and hydroponics/aquaponics systems.  They will also need to develop a variety of cost-effective nanomaterials as well as characterize them using SEM, TEM, Raman, ICP-MS, XPS, and XRD. The appointee will work in an interdisciplinary environment supervised by Prof. Edmund C. M. Tse.

A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, in addition to annual leave and medical benefits.

The University only accepts online application for the above post.  Applicants should apply online and upload an up-to-date C.V.  Review of applications will commence as soon as possible and continue until December 31, 2024, or until the posts are filled, whichever is earlier.
