DEPARTMENT OF BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING

Associate Professor / Assistant Professor in Biomedical Engineering (Clinical Prosthetics and Orthotics) (Ref. 240627010)

The Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME) is one of the six academic departments in the Faculty of Engineering, and it offers a full spectrum of BME programmes, ranging from undergraduate to postgraduate levels.  The team is the first group to offer Biomedical Engineering related undergraduate programme in Hong Kong, and has made great achievements in BME education, innovative research and technology transfer.  Currently BME has four thematic research areas, including Medical Imaging and Biosensing, Molecular and Cellular Engineering, Neuromusculoskeletal Science and Engineering, Prosthetics, Orthotics, and Rehabilitation Engineering.  It aims to conduct cutting-edge researches in these areas and nurture future leaders in prosthetics and orthotics, clinical engineering, medical instrumentation and sensors, and biological engineering by imparting interdisciplinary knowledge, innovative ideas, critical thinking and practical skills.  Please visit the website at http://www.polyu.edu.hk/bme for more information about the Unit.

The appointee will be required to:

  • teach at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and contribute to programme and curriculum development;
  • initiate innovative research projects that lead to publications in top-tier refereed journals and awards of external research grants;
  • supervise student projects and theses;
  • engage in industrial and scholarly research/consultancy activities;
  • undertake academic and departmental administrative duties; and
  • perform any other duties as assigned by the Head of Unit or his delegates. 

Qualifications

Applicants should have:

  • a doctoral degree in Prosthetics, Orthotics, Rehabilitation Engineering or a related discipline, preferably with a bachelor’s degree or master’s degree (professional entry) in Clinical Prosthetics and Orthotics;
  • a professional qualification in Prosthetics and Orthotics (e.g. CPO - Certified Prosthetist and Orthotist) or relevant disciplines; 
  • strong commitment to excellence in teaching and research;
  • good publication records; 
  • good networking ability and interdisciplinary collaboration skills; and 
  • excellent communication skills and the ability to use English as the medium of instruction. 

Preference will be given to those with real clinical experience (provision of direct patient services) in public and/or private sector.

Applicants for appointment at Associate Professor level should have substantial years of relevant post-qualification experience and an excellent record of relevant academic and/or research achievements.

Conditions of Service
