As one of Europe’s leading research universities, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität (LMU) in Munich is committed to the highest international standards of excellence in research and teaching. Building on its more than 500-year-long tradition, it offers a broad spectrum that covers all areas of knowledge within its 18 Faculties, ranging from the humanities, law, economics and social sciences, to medicine and the natural sciences.
The Faculty of History and the Arts of LMU Munich and the Central Board of Directors of the Monumenta Germaniae Historica invite applications for a
Full Professorship (W3) of Medieval History (Chair)
combined with
the Presidency of the Monumenta Germaniae Historica (MGH)
commencing on 1 October 2025.
The professorship is inextricably linked to the position as President of the MGH and the jointly appointed candidate will be assigned to work at the MGH.
At the Institute of Medieval History at LMU's Department of History, research is conducted on a wide variety of regional, thematic, and chronological topics in the period from about 500 to 1500. The Monumenta Germaniae Historica (MGH) is one of the world's leading institutions for the research and editing of sources on medieval history. The vacant position of President of the MGH therefore plays a key role in connecting non-university historical research and university teaching and research in the historical sciences. The duties of the President include the management and conceptual development of the Munich Institute of the MGH. The future holder of the position is also expected to continue the profile of the professorship (basic research in medieval history with a focus on edition studies) and at the same time be open to recent developments in the field (digital humanities).
Particularly desirable are proven experience in the edition of medieval sources, knowledge of digital analysis and presentation tools, and experience in personnel management. The successful candidate will also be expected to participate in interdisciplinary research activities at LMU Munich and to actively contribute to research and teaching. The teaching load is 2 SWS.
MGH and LMU would like to attract outstanding scholars with an international profile. Prerequisites for this position are a university degree, a doctoral degree or a comparable specific qualification, teaching skills at university level, excellent academic achievements in and a productive and promising research program.
LMU Munich makes a point of providing newly appointed professors with various types of support, such as welcoming services and assistance for dual career couples.
LMU Munich and MGH are equal opportunity employers. Both continue to be very successful in increasing the number of female faculty members and strongly encourages applications from female candidates. LMU Munich intends to enhance the diversity of its faculty members. Furthermore, disabled candidates with essentially equal qualifications will be given preference.
Please submit your application (comprising a curriculum vitae, documentation of academic degrees and certificates as well as a list of publications) in electronic form to the Dean of the Faculty of History and the Arts, Prof. Dr. Alexandra Kertz-Welzel, Geschwister-Scholl-Platz 1, D-80539 Munich, Germany, not later than 18 August 2024 (date of receipt): https://www.efv.verwaltung.uni-muenchen.de/w3magmgh (registration required).
