The Institute of Biological Chemistry of the University of Vienna, a subunit of the Faculty of Chemistry, announces a predoctoral position (PhD, 30h/week), working with Professor Christian FW Becker. We expect expertise in the area of (bio-)organic and peptide synthesis as well as experience with peptide purification, analysis and preferably also with biophysical characterization of peptide and proteins.

Your future tasks:

You actively participate in research, teaching & administration, which means:

  • You are involved in research projects and scientific studies in the area of peptide and protein chemistry.
  • We expect you to finalize your dissertation agreement within 12-18 months.
  • You work on your dissertation and its completion.
  • You hold courses independently within the scope of the provisions of the collective bargaining agreement.
  • You take on administrative tasks in research, teaching and administration.

Your personal sphere of influence:

The institute provides an excellent environment for research at the interface of synthetic organic chemistry, molecular biology, biophysics and biomedicine. We combine chemical approaches such as the synthetic of modified amino acids with solid phase peptide syntheses (SPPS) and biotechnological methods to address scientific challenges in the areas of protein biochemistry, neuropeptide research, biomaterials and medicine. You continuously strive for scientific and personal development and look for a place to carry out internationally.

As part of our diverse team, you will be involved in the synthesis of modified peptides and proteins, their biochemical as well as biophysical characterization and application in functional assays. You are expected to participate in teaching and adminstration.

This is part of your personality:

  • Completed Master's degree or Diploma, in the field of Chemistry, Biological Chemistry or Biochemistry.
  • Basic experience in academic writing and with research methods.
  • Excellent command of written and spoken English.
  • You should be a team player with high social skills.
  • IT basic user skills.
  • Ability to work in a team.
  • Knowledge/experience in the field of peptide and protein chemistry.
  • High intrinsic motivation for research.

What we offer:

The employment duration is 4 years. Initially limited to 1.5 years, the employment relationship is automatically extended to 4 years if the employer does not terminate it within the first 12 months by submitting a non-extension declaration.
