About the opportunity

We are seeking to appoint an outstanding and established Professor with an international reputation for excellence and a strong academic track record in research and teaching in the broad area of design, with particular interest areas in [any of]: ethnography, anthropology, sustainable design, or science and technology studies (STS).

The design discipline at The University of Sydney was established more than 40 years ago and has a long and well-established reputation in leading design research. This is a unique opportunity to shape a growing discipline that combines social design, interaction design, and artificial intelligence, with critical perspectives on, and the application of design across technology, society, and innovation.

As a professor, you must be an exemplary and eminent academic leader who can play a pivotal role in shaping and driving our emerging research agenda, with a strong focus on early and mid-career researcher mentorship to support the next generation of design academics. The successful candidate must have demonstrable experience of securing funding for world-class academic or industry research activity with translational outputs and a strong record of high-quality dissemination.

The post-holder will contribute to the future-focused development of our integrated teaching programs including Bachelor of Design (Interaction Design), Design Major, Master of Interaction Design and Electronic Arts, Master of Design (with specialisations in Design Innovation, and Strategic Design), and Higher Research Degrees. This role will also provide leadership in curriculum development and program design across the discipline to further enhance the University's standing as a national leader in education.

Professors are expected to play a strategic development and governance role in the discipline and the wider school, leading improvements and encouraging excellence. Importantly, we are seeking a professor who can foster a vibrant and engaged academic culture, and value applicants who can operate with an inter-disciplinary mindset.

Furthermore, this post-holder must make a demonstrable and progressive contribution to developing and nurturing local, national, and international global partnerships that reinforce the School's position as a disciplinary leader in design.

About you (skills, capabilities and experience)

  • A PhD in a relevant field.
  • An international reputation and recognition for scholarly research and/or research translation, as evidenced by the awarding of competitive research grants and publications, or evidenced societal impact such as impact on policy, product/service implementation and social innovation.
  • Demonstrated success in leading educational and pedagogical excellence, with excellent examples of curriculum development and program design, and evidence of student-experience focused innovation.
  • Wide network of relationships with reputable and relevant academic, industry and professional institutions, partners and stakeholders that can be leveraged to enhance the standing of the School and University.
  • Evidence of strong and successful strategic academic leadership and proven ability to sustain and grow research groups. This includes early and mid-career mentoring and evidence of fostering a vibrant and engaged academic culture.
  • Experience in operating in large, complex, collaborative research groupings.
